Queen Elizabeth II Reflections by Malcolm, Lord Forbes, Chief of the Name and Arms of Forbes. Few of us can remember a time when The Queen was not on the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Her very sudden departure has taken us all by surprise and, from the emotions triggered by the sad news of her death, it is clear that the country will require a period of adjustment to come to terms with its loss. For more than 70 years Queen Elizabeth II provided a faultless example to the country of selfless duty and dedicated service to not only her people in this country but also to the world. Forbes, Gordon, and the Battle of Corrichie October 28 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Corrichie in 1562 between the Scottish government and a rebellion led by George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly, then Lord Chancellor. After the death of her husband King Francis II of France, Queen Mary returned to Scotland in 1561. The Catholic Earl of Huntly was dismayed by Queen Mary’s acceptance of Protestants in her privy council and led a rebellion against her. While William, 7th Lord Forbes, held much of his estate from Huntly in exchange for his loyalty, the Scottish Government formally released him from his oath of allegiance. This allowed Lord Forbes to join Clan Fraser, Clan Munro, Clan Mackenzie, Clan Mackintosh, Clan Mackay, Clan Murray, and Clan Cameron to rally to the Royalist cause while Huntly rallied Clan Gordon and Clan Brodie. Under Queen Mary’s half-brother, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, Lord Forbes commanded the local clans of the Forbes, Leslie, Irvine, and Hays. The Queen's forces achieved a resounding victory. A good place to start is at ScotlandsPeople. You just need to type in the name and range of years for a specific ancestor. You will need to register in order to view the documents. Some of the databases you can access include: Statutory registers (civil registers of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland); church registers (births or baptisms, marriages and burials); census returns (every 10 years in Scotland from 1841 onwards); valuation rolls (owners and occupiers of buildings and other properties); legal records (wills and testaments, coats of arms, soldiers' and airmen's wills and the records of military service appeals tribunals); poor relief and migration records (1852-57); prison registers (1852 to 1921); and kirk sessions and other church court records.
