Show your support for Climate Action!
On Wednesday evening, March 9*, Melinda Collins, Milton Selectwoman, will present Town Engineer Marina Fernandes's proposal to launch the process of creating a comprehensive municipal Climate Action Plan. First steps in charting a viable path to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 funding would involve funding, engagement of consultant expertise, an emissions inventory, and assessing various solution scenarios (building electrification? EVs? etc.). Funding the inventory analysis soon would demonstrate Milton's serious commitment to taking climate action and make the town's application for an MVP action grant more compelling.
Sustainable Milton encourages members to attend (via Zoom) the public Select Board meeting to show their support. *[Note: this date and agenda are not yet finalized but will be found on the town's website here, with Zoom link.]
Contact your Senator about the 'Bigger Better Bottle Bill S.2149'
Milton's Senator Walter Timilty co-sponsored S.2149, which updates legislation to expand bottle deposits on water, sports drinks, "nips," teas, and other beverages. If he's "your guy" on Beacon Hill, thank him and encourage him to influence his colleagues as soon as possible. If you have family and friends in other parts of Massachuestts, please ask them to contact their own senator: 16 have endorsed; 21 are needed for a slim Senate majority.
We know plastic bottles are a plague upon our environment (if you've participated in Milton GreenUp or Neponset River Watershed Associations (NepRWA) spring/fall cleanup days - you know firsthand!): manufacturing (often from fracked petroleum products) and disposing of them. Solid waste burned in incinerators pollutes surrounding neighborhoods so this is an Environmental Justice issue. It's easy to find your senator here, and Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG) has an action guide to inform you.
