Welcome

We are out a little late because I've been curating the massive 17 person Sheet Film survey together for XYZ Photo Gallery.

To my horror, last month, I did not include the Catherine Opie show at Heidi last month, it is ongoing thankfully! As usual there is a lot of exhibitions and this month I've collated so many great contests, grants and a couple of grants! Through your hat in and enter/apply!

Our goal is to reach as many people as we can and bring the photo community in Victoria together to know and experience all that we have. Each month our long term content moves to reframe-refocus.xyz for look buy/fix, hire, labs and previous newsletters so that you can view a full list of what is here.

If you write photography criticism and live are around Melbourne, we would love to hear from you about building a career in Victoria. Also we are on the lookout for talented photographers/artists to promote through the newsletter, gallery and by word of mouth.

In an age of short attention spans and instant gratification, that has applied to all aspects of life, there is a quiet rebellion happening.

We see imaging making devices get smaller, simpler, quicker to use and makes many acceptable images fast. Many many images. We are now overwhelmed with photographs. Our own and others. The amount of attention to detail is decreasing. The need to study and perfect a craft is disappearing.

This is hard to find, Details on the website.

Be Longing

Parminder Kaur Bhandal

14 June to 9 July 2023

The trees can stand for decades, decaying quietly, and slowly, while leaching a gradual and steady release of nutrients back into the forestry understory. Housing ecological islands of otherness.
This idea of a dead thing sustaining life has become a metaphor within the work itself. It is an ode to the things that are no longer with us but still exist as a continuous source of strength and comfort. How people, places, and experiences from the past inform who we are and what we become.

Songs Festival

Cybele Malinowski, Wendy McDougall, Greg Noakes, Gary Ede and more.

Surface Tension

John Inns

12 July to 6 August 2023

Conventional boundaries of photographic practice are challenged by inviting the water within the river to collaborate in the image-making process. Photographic negatives are submerged into water collected from the site where they were exposed. The river reworks the negatives in unpredictable ways, creating new photographs that are corrupted and transformed by the water. The original memory of the place is erased and replaced by a photographic amnesia. The resulting images are faded and abstracted, defying and challenging recognition.

The Well

Sarah Walker

1 June - 15 June 2023

The Well set into motion one icy winter after I created a series of images summing up a period of great solitude and reflection. They became a sequence of quiet contemplations on love, heartbreak, grief, family, and uncertainty. These images were left behind, only to be seen by me.

After visiting a psychic named Annabella, what was prophesied were the images I had already been making. She knew about the people closest to me, the decisions I was facing and what I cherished – it seemed like she knew everything about me then.

The impact of this reading transformed my photographs into soft premonitions. The interaction with Annabella galvanised a new way of seeing my experiences, and I began photographing the foreboding descriptions fed to me during our time together. A black dog; the moon; the sea; a strange woman.

Where does your body end and mine begin?

Madeline Bishop

17 June - 02 July 2023

Where does your body end and mine begin? is a collection of images in small sequences. The camera remains static and repeatedly captures a scene from one angle, whilst the subjects move around the room, trying to enact the same pose over and over.

20 Jun to 12 Aug 2023

Closer Together’ reflects on the 25-year cross-cultural relationship between the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT’s School of Art. It is proudly one of the university’s longest running transnational educational partnerships.

The Chinese classic text the ‘Tao Te Ching’ suggests that the world is made up of what we know and what we don’t know, which are ultimately the same. ‘Closer Together’ proposes that togetherness, creative dialogue and art-making can help us understand this – that through these processes we can come to better know the mysteries of the unknown. This exhibition shines a light on 15 artists from the Hong Kong Art School and RMIT community whose works celebrate connectivity and kinship and uncover new knowledge through exchange.

Tours de Force: Entertainers on the Front Line

to October 2023

Since the Vietnam War, Australian entertainers have performed for troops on the front line in war and peacekeeping operations. Their talent and celebrity have lifted spirits and brought a slice of home to service personnel abroad.

In this special exhibition, stories, memorabilia and rare photos and videos tell the stories of entertainers on the front line spanning Lorrae Desmond, Normie Rowe and Lucky Starr to Kylie Minogue, John Farnham and Lehmo. It also explores the mission, operations and experiences of the people who have facilitated these successful tours.

Her work explores cultural and environmental points of tension, interrogating them with humour and a critical perspective. Her practice is centred around deconstructing familiar scenes and re-presenting them to allow for alternative narratives that reflect, amongst other things, on cultural diversity within Australian society and the ecological impact of the global climate crisis.

Binding Ties

Catherine Opie

to 9 July 2023

Since the 1990s Catherine Opie’s photographs have challenged and illuminated our understanding of notions of personal and political affiliation. Opie has in this time firmly established an international reputation as one of the leading photographers of her generation. This is the first survey of the artist’s work in Australia.

While Opie remains best known for her portraits of leather dykes, drag performers and transgender members of her queer community in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the nineties, the world around these works has shifted seismically. Today, they may be read in light of contemporary understandings of gender and sexuality as more fluid, the limits of community and kinship as increasingly porous and concepts of citizenship progressively more inclusive and accountable. The exhibition at Heide traverses Opie’s early, most recognisable works exploring constructions of gender and sexuality, through alternative conceptions of the nuclear household, to more recent musings on solidarity and collective action in the face of proliferating global crises.

THE END OF THE BEGINNING

Craig Tuffin

to 9 July 2023

We often spend much of our time remembering. It’s easy to experience feelings of nostalgia when looking at old photographs. Even vernacular photographs without authorship, with their bent corners, anonymous handwriting and stains from poor processing and mishandling, can elicit those same emotions. All photographs are in a cycle of surreal transformation, where the present immediately becomes the past, and the past evidence of an inevitable future.

THE LIGHT FADES BUT THE GODS REMAIN

BILL HENSON

11 March to 25 June 2023

The light fades but the gods remain is a major exhibition showcasing two key series by Bill Henson, one of Australia’s most eminent artists. These explore the suburb of Glen Waverley, where the artist grew up. In celebration of MGA’s 25th anniversary, Henson was commissioned to revisit the suburb of his childhood and to produce a new body of work reflecting upon his earlier series Untitled 1985–86, known by many as ‘the suburban series’. This ground-breaking commission offers an unparalleled insight into one of Australia’s most revered artists as he explores the notion of home, intensifying the everyday to a point of dramatic revelation and romantic beauty.
