The ICHP Resumes Operations |
We are glad that following the reopening of The Maa Trust (TMT) and relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, we have now resumed the Integrated Community Healthcare Project (ICHP). ICHP was launched by The Maa Trust in October 2019 to address Population, Health and Environment issues across the Maasai Mara Ecosystem. The Project fully resumed in September with 8 medical camps in different villages in Maasai Mara, in addition to the ongoing door to door work undertaken by Community-Based Mobilizers (CHMs) and backpack services in remote communities. September, this project reached a total of 614 community members with access to free, quality healthcare. Click to Read more |

During the school holidays, Great Plains Foundation supports three clubs for the 50 children we serve with scholarships. Each club has a unique environmental/conservation and social theme. On 17th August 2020 conservation holiday camps started. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we divided the children into three groups in order to take the government recommended precautions. These groups were trained in different locations near their homes; helping us observe social distancing by having only 13-17 children per training. Click to Read more |

Kitchen Gardens Benefiting Environment Conservation |
During the Conservation Holiday Club, we trained the children with two topics about conservation: the benefits of kitchen gardens and how they act as a predictor of enhanced dietary diversity. Our focus is to encourage the kids to embrace and participate in small scale gardening, connect it to promoting wildlife conservation, and teach health benefits provided by goods grown in the garden. Gardening is good for the children because it helps them have a sense of accountability, it involves hand-eye coordination and sensory intake, and it’s an ongoing activity that can extend beyond the garden for learning. Especially now that they are not in school due to COVID-19, having a long term project to focus on and learn from can assist in relieving large amounts of stress that accompany this pandemic. The Maa Trust Trains Maasai Women in Beekeeping |
Beekeeping is one of the first projects created and coordinated by the Trust back in 2006. Over the years, many lessons have been learned regarding how to improve the Maa honey social enterprise and not rely on external companies. Several Maa Trust staff have been trained on beekeeping so that we are able to oversee the project directly. Tourism in the Maasai Mara provides a large profitable market for honey sales. We are expanding Maa Honey in 2020 by offering women's groups and families the opportunity to buy new CAB hives with a down payment of $50 with the other $50 covered by a loan subsidy repaid through harvest sales and then redistributed to other families or groups. To achieve this, we are looking for donors and partners who would like to donate $50 or more to support a loan subsidy. If you would like to donate $50 or more towards this endeavor, Click Here. Words of Noolmeshuki Kereto (Maa Beadwork Member Since 2013) |
Noolmeshuki Kereto narrates about how Maa Beadwork has supported her and her family since she became a member in 2013. “I have witnessed great changes in my life since joining Maa Beadwork. Before joining Maa Beadwork there’s a lot I did not know such as how women can come together and empower each other. After being selected to be part of Maa Beadwork we were organized into beading groups and this enabled us to share ideas. Within our group we subdivided ourselves into two smaller groups of ten ladies, we agreed to be contributing an amount of two thousand Kenya shillings per lady per month and the lump sum of twenty thousand Kenya shillings would be given to one lady every month. After ten months all the ladies in the subgroup had received their share. After receiving the money, I went and bought iron sheets which I set aside until I had saved up enough money to construct a house.” Noolmeshuki Kereto Click to Read More |
