Feature ArticleWhat is the Premack Principle? A 'not so science-y' approach to behavior |
The Premack Principle, better known as, “first, then” is often used in ABA sessions. For example, “First clean up your toys, then we can color”. The Premack principle is used to motivate individuals to engage in a task that has a lower probability of being engaging in; once the lower preferred activity is completed, then the individual is granted access to something reinforcing. |
This strategy is not only used in ABA sessions, but also used in everyday life. Individuals may tell themselves “First I’ll answer all my emails, then I’ll order my favorite coffee”. This way they are willing to get through what they NEED to do in order to do what they WANT to do. The Premack principle may also be used to work through transitions. “First circle time, then free play”. This way learners understand that there is a beginning and end to every activity. When implementing this support, it is important to be consistent and always follow through. Example: Johnny wants to play, but first he must engage in circle time with his classmates. In this case, free play will serve as a reinforcer after circle time is done. By contacting this contingency, Johnny will be more likely to engage in circle time again in the future knowing he will then have access to something he wants after he completes his requested task. |
