It has been quite an autumn for tree news and events. We had the Shaftesbury Tree Festival in September, with these wonderful hats and artwork by Jon Corry. I love that shadow of a tree (below), drawn in chalk with the help of many kids. |

During a visit to Cambridge I found the most wonderful trees filling college courtyards and seen through chapel windows. Trees really do create spaces which draw people in, inviting them to linger and appreciate the life around them. |

It was a great joy to visit a site I helped plant in January 2013, at Gold Hill Farm, Child Okeford, Dorset. The birch have done spectacularly well and many of the other native broadleaves are thriving. |

Autumn was rather slow this year down our way, but it did have some special moments, such as this magnificent tulip tree picked out by the sun, near St. James's church. |

This year I have spent a lot of time researching and writing a policy paper on Regenerative Forestry for the Soil Association. It is with the designers now and should be published as a pdf download in the new year. I coined the term 'regenerative forestry' as a complement to regenerative agriculture, advocating a land use which not only produces timber and fibre for us, but which also brings benefits for biodiversity, climate and people. It can be done and there are many fine examples. Another question I am researching is "How many trees do we need in Britain?" We only have 13% forest cover (European average is about 40%) and we import 81% of the wood we consume, so we really need to do more - but how much, and where . . . ? I hope to be writing more about this. |
