One of the best books that I have read about habits is called Atomic Habits by James Clear (I recommend it to everyone!).
The five big ideas from this book:
1. Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.
2. If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead.
3. The most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become.
4. The Four Laws of Behavior Change are a simple set of rules we can use to build better habits. They are (1) make it obvious, (2) make it attractive, (3) make it easy, and (4) make it satisfying.
5. The environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behaviour.
Another great book about habits - Make time by Jake Knapp & John Zeratsky. They talk about having one highlight in the day and focusing on it. So instead of spending our time on many different things that pull us in different directions, we decide on one thing that we want to achieve that day. Then scheduling it and making time for it, letting everything else take space around this one thing, our one goal for the day. Another important thought from the book is not letting 'the defaults' take away our time - things that other people do and we feel we should also do. Like spending hours dealing with emails.
Questions to ask to identify your highlight:
1. What needs to get done? (urgency)
2. What do I want to get done? (satisfaction)
3. What do I like to do? (joy)
In this month's worksheet, you have different questions to work through which will help to build a better life that is aligned with who you are and who you wish to be.
