December 2022 Newsletter

OFF THE RACK

Join us at our warehouse space on the west bank

this Sunday, December 11th from 9am - 12 pm

for our first community textile recycling day!

For $2/pound, we'll take your old clothing and fabric that has reached the end of its life and send it to our textile

recycling partner in Texas.

(the fee covers the cost to ship)

There, the material will be shredded and turned into stuffing

for things like carseats and punching bags.

We only want clothing and linens that are no longer

suitable to be used or worn!

When we talk about

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

recycle is the last word for a reason!

It should be the last choice.

  • If the clothing can still be worn, we're working on a

clothing swap with local creative collective f/504 in January.

Find out details here.

  • Or you can donate the clothing to a local shop doing

good work such as Out of the Closet, whose

funding goes to AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s

HIV prevention and treatment services.

  • Is it something that needs repairing? We'll have a class in January at ricRACK's Community Sewing Studio

where you can learn mending and darning techniques!

Email Baylee at ricracksews@gmail.com if you want to be the first to know when that class is on the books.

  • Is is something that can be reimagined into a

new garment that you would be excited to wear?

If you have basic sewing skills, bring it to

    Community Sew with Jahireen

and they will help you breathe some new life into it.

(if you don't yet have basic sewing skills, sign up for Total Beginner!)

  • Is it fabric in good condition that just needs a new home?

We'll accept it at the warehouse on Sunday as a

tax deductible donation for our creative

reuse shop. Its sale will help fund our mission!

  • Old sheets and towels? We'll accept them at the warehouse on Sunday and bring them to Zeus' Rescues where they'll be used by

cats and dogs waiting for their forever homes.

Let's work together and think creatively

to keep textiles out of the landfill!

We're also looking for volunteers for the event, email Blythecraft@gmail.com to sign up to help out.

Can't make it to this one? Don't worry!

We're hoping to make this a monthly event.

Sewing Studio Manager?

Baylee Robertson (she/they/he)

Baylee is a theater artist based in New Orleans where they design costumes for professional and children’s theater. Baylee offers a unique perspective to the sewing world as a gender-fluid lesbian who is passionate about storytelling and studio arts. Baylee began sewing at 6 years old, but their real talents lay dormant until they joined theater in high-school.
