NEWS & VIEWS

Today is the Second Sunday before Advent (33rd Sunday in Ordinary time) and being the nearest Sunday to Armistice Day, we keep it as Remembrance Sunday, with King and Country remembering all those who have fallen in war. The second world war is disappearing from living memory, as the first has, but tragically the horror of war is still with us. Today we pray for all who have fallen in war and we honour their memory with the church’s highest act of worship, the Holy Eucharist.

Today our Solemn Requiem Mass incorporates an Act of Remembrance, with the traditional two minutes’ silence at 11am as, with King and country, we commemorate and honour all those who have fallen in war.

QUIZ EVENING 7.30pm next Saturday. Tickets for our annual Fish and Chip Quiz Evening, costing £15 (free for children under 12) are available from Margaret Quinney today. The price includes a supper of fish/chicken/sausage (vegetarian option available), chips and soft drinks. If you would like other drinks, please bring your own. Our quizmaster will be Fr John Brown, Vicar of St Luke’s Ilford.

CHRIST THE KING Next Sunday, the last of the Church’s year, we celebrate Christ’s universal kingship with this beautiful solemnity. After Mass we shall have Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

BUT IT'S NOT YET CHRISTMAS ... ADVENT QUIET DAY

On Thursday 1 December, from 10am to 4pm, Fr Chris Burke, Archdeacon of Barking, will lead an exploration of Advent as a season for hope, commitment and transformation, building on some of the traditional Advent themes, at the Diocesan House of Retreat in Pleshey (CM3 1HA). The cost is £28 or £42 including lunch and you will need to arrange your own transport. Book by Thursday 24 November at tinyurl.com/advent-retreat.

Q&A SESSION WITH BISHOP OF CHELMSFORD On Thursday 1 December Bishop Guli will be at the Redbridge Deanery Synod at St Paul's Goodmayes, and, after a short act of worship at 8pm, will answer questions. Light refreshments will follow. All are welcome. Please email any questions for the Bishop to vicar@stpaulsgoodmayes.org.uk by tomorrow, Monday 14 November.

PASTORAL CARE COURSE The first of two courses leading to accreditation as an Authorised Pastoral Assistant, suitable for all involved in caring informally for others and who wish to develop and grow their pastoral skills / role. The sessions will be on Saturdays in January to April 2023. More details from Diane Hardy - dhardy@chelmsford.anglican.org / 01245 294449 or Hazel Kempton - hkempton@chelmsford.anglican.org / 01245 294456.
