what makes a hero?

In a writing group meeting the other day, someone asked why I wrote so many different kinds of novels.

It's not what you are "supposed" to do. Instead, to find success, we're told to write to a particular audience, say romance lovers or mystery fans.

Instead, I've published a mystery, a women's fiction novel, and a psychological thriller. This will be followed by another women's fiction novel and then a couple of mysteries. So, why do I meander instead of taking the direct route to a particular type of audience?

The short answer is that I write the stories that come to me. The longer answer is that my books have a common theme. They are all about women who get into difficult and sometimes dangerous situations and have to save themselves. There may be a few white knights in some of my novels, but it's the women who save the day.

The situations these women get into make the novels different - sometimes they have to solve a mystery, other times they cause their own problems. But they always have to become the heroes of their stories.

I believe there are plenty of everyday people walking around with invisible superhero capes. Those are the people I want to write about.

P.S. I am in Texas right now because my father just had heart surgery here. Hospitals like the one I'm sitting in are full of superheroes - and I am incredibly grateful for this.

Happy Travels: Grand Canyon National Park

Big Bend is a spectacular national park. It has relatively few visitors as it's hard to get to down in the elbow of Texas. I was fortunate to visit last spring with my parents and son. The cacti were in full bloom and it was gorgeous.

Do you have a favorite national park?
