"Sankalpa" Set your Sankalpa for 2023 Sankalpa is your heartfelt intention. An intention is a short word or phrase that we create and repeat to bring about positive change in ones life. It is not a goal. How do you want to be in the world? How do you want others to see you? Your intention should be a statement of truth. There is so much to discover about ourselves and each other through questioning our intentions and our expectations. Your "sankalpa" is private to you and typically not shared with others. *If you need help digging deep for that positive change, you can reach out and we can work together to create you own personal intention. |

How do you know your yoga practice is working?? You start to care increasingly less about what other people can do with their bodies. We focus more on ourselves and accept where we are in the process. You begin to realize it is not about the asana, but more about the opportunity for self inquiry You notice you become more present and less reactive in your day-to-day life. You don't look at others and compare yourself during class. You realize you are there for you.
These are just a few. Yoga changes us but sometimes its hard to see because the changes are gradual. We change physically and mentally with a consistent practice. Practice yoga once a week, change your mind Practice yoga twice a week, change your body Practice yoga everyday, it will change your life |

Many of you know I am a nurse practitioner with the stroke program here in Naples. Our very own yogi and interventional neurosurgeon, Dr. AbuAwad came out with this book this past December. If you have an interest in learning a bit more about the brain and stroke then grab your copy on Amazon. You can bring your book to class for a signature. I heard a rumor that part 2 is in the works focusing on prevention. Stay tuned. |

When January hits we all start thinking about detoxing our bodies from all the holiday treats we have been eating. I am going to share some tips to help get us back on the right track. The art of detoxing is taking things slowly. The goal is to be consistent with your diet and keep the changes small and one at a time. This way it will be more sustainable for you. Some simple ideas to help you start: sip on more water, all day long (you can add a little lemon or ginger) make more smoothies or juices swap our white bread for sourdough try to eat plant based (plants are anti-inflammatory and can reverse disease) eat more quinoa - its packed with nutrients and protein limit dairy Don't eat after 6 pm eat your larger meals for breakfast and lunch - keep dinner light exercise meditate - 10 minutes a day, it helps in clearing your mind and making good choices
Give it a try! |

Let's talk Garlic: Your must-have ingredient for winter wellness. As we continue to battle viruses you can add this to your diet for a little health boost. For more than 4,000 years, garlic has been used as medicine for many types of ailments. These include digestive and respiratory problems, fatigue, bacterial infections, toothache, arthritis and heart disease. *A 2020 research review published in the journal of Medicine found that multiple studies have found that garlic intake is associated with less incidence of colorectal cancer. *Garlic has been known to have antibiotic properties and used to help treat numerous non-life threatening infections. *Some of the more recent research shows HUGE benefits to those who have any risk for heart disease. Check out the link to the study below. https://academic.oup.com/jn/article/136/3/741S/4664305 |

Asana Clinic Childs pose "Balasana" one of my favorites |
|
|
Child's Pose or Balasana is a resting posture, it is a foundational yoga posture that reminds us that stillness can be just as valuable as action. For some people, this can be a challenging posture especially if you have tight hips, knees and shoulders. This posture activates the relaxation response and deactivates the stress response. It helps stretch the lower back, thighs and ankles. For some, this posture can relieve headaches and migraines. Start by kneeling on the floor, big toes touch and knees separate. On your exhale, forward fold, lay your torso down between your thighs. Tuck your chin slightly. Walk your hands out in front of you or reach back towards your feet and allow the arms to rest on the floor along your side. Stay in the posture from 30 seconds to a few minutes. If your head does not reach the floor, use a block for support. Experiment with the width of your knees to create more comfort. |

Update on location: Our 8th Ave S beach location is still under construction and being put back together. The hurricane did more damage than we thought. Before they will place the grass down, they want to secure safe beach access. So this may take a few more weeks. Realistically we may be looking towards February or March. Many of you are missing being closer to the beach, so we are going to start having our classes at the beach at the Central Ave access. There is parking on central and the adjacent streets. |
