Hi there. Akwi here. That excerpt above is from a story inspired by a dress one little girl wore on a random beautiful October day in Iowa. It was not a day punctuated by an extraordinary experience (like, say, scaling Mt. Everest or swimming the English Channel). But it was a day -- which the dress represented -- that held special meaning to one family.
We're eager to tell those stories. I mean, we'll tell the Everest and English Channel stories, too, if you have them -- don't get us wrong! But this project was born out of a deep desire to tell the stories that can unify us by reminding us of our shared extraordinary humanity that even the seemingly ordinary moments have the power to illuminate.
Remember fabric is the inspiration! Is there a tablecloth you've been storing in a plastic tub in your basement for eons that inspires stories about family dinners? A beach towel that inspires a story about a particularly meaningful vacation? A pair of your grandpa's old jeans that reminds you of him for a particular reason? We're especially looking for objects of fabric that you're ready to part with as they'll be deconstructed and transformed into original art as part of The Remoir Project online and in-person exhibitions. But there are a number of ways to incorporate your story into the project without parting with the remnant if you're not ready for that. The first step is to think about your own fabric-inspired story and then connect with us to discuss how it might be best honored.
Helping to share your stories with the world through visual & audio art is an honor and responsibility that we don't take lightly. Let us know if you'd like to participate and keep in mind that if you have friends or family in other parts of the country, you could spread the word to them! Our goal is to tell stories from all US states and territories by the culmination of the project.
