Your Cover Letter: Using Keywords Your cover letter needs to check a lot of boxes; see previous tips about what to watch for when writing your letter of introduction. However one of the most important details often overlooked by candidates is the need to use keywords taken from the job advertisement itself. This is where you should be customizing your cover letter to suit the job for which you're applying. You want it to read naturally that you are the candidate perfectly suited for their job opening.

Follow these tips to insert the job description's keywords into your cover letter: 

  • Firstly, look for similarities in your CV experience and the job advertisement - make sure to highlight these matches;

  • Use the same adjectives and action verbs used in the job posting;

  • Assure the school that you have their list of "must-haves" by being explicit and mentioning them; and

  • Keep it succinct but when you can, use examples from your own teaching to illustrate your abilities and qualities.
