Community COVID-19 Updates

Follow Us on Facebook and Twitter.

Dear Friends,

We are living in challenging times which call for diligence, kindness and a need to check in on others. In our community we have a high number of seniors, many who live alone.

While we must self-distance to reduce the spread of COVID-19, let's make sure we are not isolating the most vulnerable. Please take the time to call a neighbour who may not be totally aware of updates or measures put into place by various levels of government or health agencies. Others may be anxious and lonely and would appreciate a kind word.

Where and when you can, please lend an ear.

There have been many updates from all levels of government over the last week and we are sharing some with you in this e-newsletter with links for further information.

Wishing you good health,

Janet, Tracie, Walter, Marg, Peter and Tony

COVID-19: HEALTH ADVICE

Toronto Region COVID-19 Assessment Centres

Last updated: March 23, 2020 at 6:16 p.m.

A number of dedicated assessment centres have been established across Toronto to facilitate assessment and testing.

Due to evidence of community spread of COVID-19 in Toronto, the assessment centers in the Toronto Region will be shifting their focus to people who are at risk of transmitting COVID-19 to large groups of people. Everyone else, even those with mild symptoms who have returned from travel, do not need testing, unless they get sick enough to go to an emergency department. See criteria below.

Toronto Public Health (TPH) is not an assessment centre and testing is not provided at TPH offices.

  2. Who Should Visit an Assessment Centre
  3. If You Are Unsure:
    • People who are unsure if they should visit an assessment centre should:
      • call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 and speak with a registered nurse who will guide whether you will require further care or potential testing in person, or
      • call their primary care provider

OHIP coverage is not required to be seen at a COVID-19 Assessment Centre. The assessment is provided at no cost to the individual.

SELF-DISTANCING

It's good for your mental and physical health to get out for some fresh air but avoid spaces where people gather. The best way to stop the spread of COVID-19 is to stay home, limit your contact with others and avoid making non-essential trips in the community.

  • No dinner parties or get-together's
  • No play dates
  • No gathering at the playground
  • Limit contact with people at higher risk (e.g. older adults and those in poor health)

Friends, we love our parks but playground equipment is not sanitized & it's difficult for eager children who want to play with others to keep their distance.

Do your part.  Don't put others at risk.

BE VIGILANT

Scams include companies offering “fast” COVID-19 tests for sale and fraudsters posing as police imposing on-the-spot fines to consumers wearing masks.

Note: The Canadian Red Cross is NOT going door-to-door offering testing.

If someone comes to your home making any claim - do not open the door and call police (not 911) 416-808-2222.
