6 Dimensions of National Culture |
|
|
Defining culture can be a complex task, especially given its often subjective and implicit nature. One way we can understand how societies and individuals are shaped by culture is Geert Hofstede's 6-D Model of National Culture. As explained in their online resource, "Geert Hofstede, assisted by others, came up with six basic issues that society needs to come to term with in order to organize itself. These are called dimensions of culture". The six dimensions of culture are presented as the following: I highly recommend that you visit the website where there is a detailed explanation along with multimedia resources for each dimension. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of cultural dimensions, but it does serve as a helpful way to understand and engage in discussions around explicit cultural expressions and implicit expectations of behavior and communication. The following video focuses on one of the resources, 10 minutes with Geert Hofstede on Individualism versus Collectivism. |
