What a night! Politics in the Pub a huge success! |
Despite extreme weather and widespread power and telecommunications outages across our region, Wednesday night saw many engaged members of the Warragul and surrounding community come out to a romantic Valentines Day Politics in the Pub meet up! |
Political scientist Ann Capling shared how her journey started with the creation of Voices of Kooyong during covid lockdowns. She described how the disenchantment of the local Kooyong community with both their state and federal representation ignited the spark to form a community movement to fight for better representation. Ann also then unintentionally became the campaign manager for Dr Monique Ryan, and led a team of over 2000 volunteers based on values of respect, kindness and integrity. Ann also discussed how the team used attacks from the Liberal party to generate positive momentum for their candidate, which motivated her supporters even more. |
"Monash is not Kooyong", Ann noted - however the original grassroots community independent movement, on which Voices of Kooyong was based, grew out of the rural electorate of Indi, with features similar to Monash. Ann discussed the opportunities available to Monash with independent representation, including ideas to reduce the cost of living for people in regional and rural areas, the importance of job creation in the expanding renewable energy industry, opportunities for training in areas of skills shortages and the need for better health services. |

Next up - Cathy McGowan AO guest speaker at our next Politics in the Pub! |
That's right! We are honoured to host the original Community Independent herself, Cathy McGowan AO at our next Politics in the Pub event in Drouin on 21 March 2024! |
Cathy will discuss with us her time as the original community independent for the Federal seat of Indi. We are looking forward to hearing about how she brought the community with her to Canberra and involved them in the policy decisions all the way through her two terms in Parliament. Without the vested interests of a political party, Cathy was free to work with both sides of politics to achieve better policy decisions for Indi and for Australia. Cathy will discuss how putting people at the centre of politics leads to better, more efficient and effective outcomes for the local community.

Voices for Monash acknowledges the traditional owners of the lands on which we meet and work, including the lands of the Boonwurrung, Bunurong and Gunai Kurnai people, and other Aboriginal lands and nations within this country. We pay our respects to the elders of these lands, past and present, and acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded. |
