OCTOBER 2023

Opening Message from IWCA Executive Director Charlotte Hey

IWCA continues to forge ahead with our mission: encouraging the wine business to reduce carbon emissions. Spreading the word about climate change and what we can do to mitigate it within our sector is a priority; and as you’ll read in this newsletter edition, we are working hard to building strong relationships with leading retailers, influencers and press, and wineries around the world to put climate action at the forefront of the wine industry’s agenda. We would be delighted to receive your ideas and support to grow our movement; please reach out anytime!

Announcing New IWCA Supporters

We welcomed the Asociación Viticultura Regenerativa and the Regenerative Viticulture Foundation as IWCA Champions. These two organizations at the forefront of promoting regenerative practices in the wine sector will collaborate with IWCA on knowledge exchange and awareness building.

And last week, we were thrilled to announce our first Media Champion Karen MacNeil, CEO of WineSpeed and author of The Wine Bible. Karen will donate 10% of the proceeds from corporate subscriptions to the WineSpeed newsletter to IWCA. We are honored to partner with such an important figure in the wine world to advance climate action in the sector!

Expanding our Movement

Our collective of leading wine companies continues to grow in numbers and in ambition! In the past three months, we have welcomed four new Applicant Members: Abadía Retuerta (Spain), CedarCreek Estate Winery (Canada), Domaine Bousquet (our first member from Argentina), and Viña Concha y Toro (Chile)! They grow our movement to 45 wine producing companies across 11 countries, across them encompassing over 130+ wineries and brands.

We also recently celebrated major Member milestones:

  • Yealands Estate Wines (New Zealand) achieved IWCA’s prestigious Gold Member status! The company met IWCA’s rigorous standards to achieve Gold level, including demonstrating a consistent reduction of emissions per liter of wine over time and powering at least 20% of their winemaking operations with onsite renewable energy.

  • Champagnes Piper-Heidsieck, Rare & Charles Heidsieck (France), Sogrape (Portugal), and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates (United States) reached IWCA Silver Status! Since joining IWCA, these leading wine producers conducted a third-party audited GHG emissions inventory across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 and publicly committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

A Seminar on Emissions Reductions with Arhold Delhaize

In September, we co-organized a virtual educational session with Ahold Delhaize, one of the world’s largest food and beverage retailers. Speaking to over 100 wine producers and suppliers, IWCA and

Ahold Delhaize’s international sustainability and buying teams spoke about the importance of calculating GHG emissions and devising a roadmap to reduce them.

As the wine industry’s most respected and rigorous climate action certification, we were proud to collaborate with Ahold Delhaize — an influential industry leader amplifying sustainability as a core tenant of business. We look forward to further engaging retailers in the coming year as we recognize their essential role in driving an industry-wide shift!

Welcoming New Members of the IWCA Board of Directors

This month, we inaugurated two new Members of IWCA’s Board of Directors: Adrian Chitty of A to Z Wineworks (United States) and Mafalda Guedes of Sogrape (Portugal). They were elected among our membership. Along with our six other Board Members, they will provide strategic leadership to our organization across our membership-building, communications, and partnership efforts.

We thank outgoing Board Member Rob Symington of Symington Family Estates for his years of service, during which he was instrumental in helping build IWCA’s voice, reach, and organizational foundations for impact.
