What’s Happening

Most people don't know what functional nutrition is.

I'm working on the finishing touches of an online presentation to share with the community about the burgeoning field of functional medicine, what functional nutrition is and how it can help heal chronic illness. Spreading the word about this approach is dear to my ❤️.

 

I don't want others to suffer needlessly when there are actionable steps those suffering with debilitating chronic illness can take to change the terrain in which the illness exists.

Tips for a Healthy Body

If you have an autoimmune condition going gluten free is one of the first steps you must take to start healing your gut for better health. Gluten causes leaking gut. It is confirmed to be one of the preconditions for developing an autoimmune disease. Once you have an autoimmune disease, leaving your leaky gut untreated long-term can cause your condition to progress and place you at a higher risk of developing another autoimmune disease.

 

Gluten also causes inflammation. Inflammation is your immune system’s natural response to anything it deems dangerous. When your immune system is continuously creating inflammation in response to gluten, a leaky gut, and microbes and toxins flooding your bloodstream, you can develop chronic inflammation.

Eventually your body’s own tissues end up on the receiving end of the attack, leading to autoimmune disease.

 

Beyond creating a leaky gut, gluten poses a serious risk for those of us with autoimmunity because of a phenomenon called molecular mimicry, which is a dangerous case of mistaken identity. Gluten, which is a particularly large protein, happens to be structurally similar to a number of your body’s tissues, particularly your thyroid.

 

There are several other food proteins, like casein in dairy that have a similar molecular structure to gluten. Molecular mimicry causes your body to become confused and trigger an immune reaction. Cutting out gluten and the foods that cross-react with it, can make all the difference in your health.

 

If you think going gluten free is just a fad and trendy thing to do, and you have an autoimmune condition, I implore you to give an elimination phase a try. That's the first step to restore gut health. I'm trained to look at other triggers affecting your health.
