Have you ever heard that someone landed a position through networking? This occurs more frequently than you might imagine. Not only are positions in workplaces and on boards, councils, commissions, etc. acquired through direct contacts, they also come from knowing someone who knows someone "in the know." At Sister-to-Sister, Inc., our goal is to offer a pathway into opportunities that may not be publicized widely within our communities. For anyone who is "really" retired or simply not seeking new career or career-boosting opportunities, there is likely someone in your life who is. We invite you to share this and future editions of career-enhancement newsletters within your networks, and encourage other Sisters to join our Sister Circle as dues paying members and sign up for our newsletters. |

"Be in the Know!" Advance your career and enhance your quality of life. Did you know that public service through volunteerism can jumpstart your career and open personal growth, business, and various other doors of opportunity? Among other benefits, serving offers opportunities to meet and form gratifying relationships with individuals who are givers like yourself, including movers and shakers in your community; hone your skills; and do incredibly needed work to enrich your and others' lives. Yes, you are busy. And, yes you are tired. So are those who actively engage with their communities. You may have heard the adage, "If you want something done, ask the busiest person you know." Perhaps, it describes you well. Should it, thank you on behalf of all communities! Caveat: Sister-to-Sister, Inc. does not encourage overwhelming busyness. The degree of everyone's is a personal choice. Enhance your mind and body by volunteering. According to Western Connecticut State University, "Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health. Volunteering increases self-confidence. Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals. Volunteering combats depression. Reducing the risk of depression is another important benefit of volunteering. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects you against stress and depression when you’re going through challenging times. . . . . Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy. Volunteering is good for your health at any age, but it’s especially beneficial in older adults. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not, even when considering factors like the health of the participants. Volunteering has also been shown to lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease." See, https://www.wcsu.edu/community-engagement/benefits-of-volunteering/. Do not allow mobility limitations to swash your desire to engage with your community by using your phone and/or computer. Search for "remote" community engagement opportunities. Public service opportunities are everywhere. To find ones near you, search on Google with a key word phrase like "volunteer opportunities," along with your location. |
