Amazing Gifts

For Your Loved Ones In 2020

A great piece of art is better than an aged bottle of wine. Art inspires, brings peace of mind and stimulates the imagination. The value of great art will always withstand the vicissitudes of an unpredictable world.

In these unusual times what can send a message of love and positive spirit more than the gift of great art? Especially for this holiday season, Stride Arts has selected more than 30 great pieces of collectable art by Shiou-ping Liao.

Shiou-ping Liao and His Art

Liao was born in Taiwan and moved to Japan in 1959 after graduating in graphic design from the National Taiwan Normal University. It was here that he first discovered printmaking. In 1965 he began to study oil painting in Paris and worked from 1969 to 1973 in New York. He later taught in Taipei, Tokyo and the USA.

Liao’s work has been collected in major museums in the world, including:

Hsiao Ch’iung-Jui, Graduate Institute of History, National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan) describes Liao’s art as

‘Real and Unreal, Simple and Un-simple’

“Shiou-ping Liao (1936-) is a figure almost synonymous with “the art of printmaking” in Taiwan’s post-war art history. However, it is obviously unfair to see Liao merely as a print artist. Actually, his artistic creation can find its origin in oil painting. His oil paintings won him many awards and many of his large size works after 2000 are also oil paintings. However, because the style of his oil paintings is the same as that of his print works, many people fail to recognize the cross-disciplinary characteristics in Liao’s art. His recent 3D work series are further evidence of his artistic versatility. Whatever media Liao uses in his artistic creation, his works always reflect a combination of real and unreal as well as his noble qualities such as compassion for humanity and bravery to honestly confront himself. In addition, his style is marked with a seemingly paradoxical combination of intricate delicateness and simple plainness, and of colorful exuberance and quiet sadness. To conclude, he has skillfully elevated the religious beliefs and aesthetics of the grassroots in Taiwan to a more refined level with a sense of aesthetic dignity. Liao’s life as an artist is a case representative of the post-war culture in Taiwan and, therefore, is worthy of further research and understanding.” ---Hsiao Ch’iung-Jui
