Sales Tax is an important revenue for Sturgis (and all MS towns). Municipalities receive 18.5 percent of sales tax collected within their boundaries from the Mississippi Department of Revenue (MS DOR) that can be used in the general budget. Mississippi imposes a 7% tax on tangible personal property and various services. It is the responsibility of the seller to collect sales tax on items sold.
In addition to our local businesses that we easily recognize as collecting sales tax, the Town of Sturgis registers with the MS DOR as a promoter or operator for the Little Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Sturgis Community Market, and any other events hosted by the Town. The Town of Sturgis remits (to MS DOR) the sales tax collected by persons selling at these events.
Most of us are familiar with paying sales tax on items we purchase and now you can see how important it is to shop local. When you shop local, you are supporting the businesses in our town and the town itself!
For the month of June, 2024, Sturgis received $4,070.29. In the last fiscal year (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024) the town received a total of $50,540.90.
