As the winter chill sets in, the last thing any of us want is unwelcome guests seeking refuge in our home – especially the small furry kind! From high-rise apartments to historic brownstones, here are some ways to fortify your home against mice. Seal Entry Points: Inspect your home for any cracks or gaps in walls, windows, and doors. Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, so seal these entry points with caulk, steel wool or weatherstripping. Proper Food Storage: Store food in airtight containers to deny mice easy access to a food source. This includes not leaving pet food exposed overnight. Regular Cleaning: Keep your living spaces clean and clutter-free. Regularly vacuum, sweep, and mop to eliminate crumbs and food residues that may attract mice. Outdoor Maintenance: Trim vegetation and bushes around your home, keeping a clear space between the building and plants. This reduces hiding spots for mice and limits their access points. Secure Garbage Bins: Ensure that your garbage bins have tight-fitting lids, preventing mice from foraging for food in your trash. Elevate Stored Items: If you store items in basements or attics, keep them elevated and away from walls. This makes it more difficult for mice to access and nest in these areas. Use Natural Repellents: Consider using natural repellents such as peppermint oil or cotton balls soaked in a mixture of vinegar and water. Place these in areas where mice might enter. Set Traps: Strategically place mousetraps in areas where you suspect mouse activity. Be sure to check and reset them regularly.
