WELCOME TO OUR (ALMOST!) WINTER NEWSLETTER

It's been a while, and we have a lot to tell you...

SAIL CARGO ALLIANCE

(Pictured: Looking out to beautiful views of Prussia Cove from our SCA accommodation in Cornwall)

Back in October we had the pleasure of attending the 2022 Sail Cargo Alliance meeting, held at Prussia Cove in Cornwall.

The Sail Cargo Alliance is a collection of organisations like us who share a passion for sail-shipped cargo, working together with shared ethics to create a healthy transport culture that promotes the preservation of the environment for future generations.

It was an excellent opportunity to finally meet in person with our friends and partners in a hectic post-pandemic world, after a few long years without a formal get-together.

We were (and still are!) absolutely thrilled that we have had the chance to do it this year.

Prussia Cove provided the perfect backdrop for us to discuss all things sail cargo, dream, and to set a new course with our plans for the future.

As well as wonderful company and views, we were treated to amazing Cornish food, sunsets, waves, and impressive dusk-lit performances from playful dolphins.

(Pictured: Low tide at Prussia Cove)

As a result, we are extremely excited about what the future holds for sail cargo, and the emission-free transport of delicious and ethically sourced goods via sailing ship.

We have left feeling more inspired than ever to do what we do.

CHRISTIAAN DE BEUKELAER

This year's Sail Cargo Alliance meeting presented us with the opportunity to meet with Christiaan De Beukelaer, otherwise known as Sail Cargo Research. Christiaan has spent time researching sail cargo over the last few years, and has visited many of the different sail cargo projects currently in operation around the world.

We were inspired to hear Christiaan's pandemic story of his planned trip to take a short voyage (around three weeks) onboard the sail cargo ship Avontuur as part of his research. This voyage took an unexpected turn when the pandemic struck in the early months of 2020, and Christiaan became stuck onboard the ship for five months straight. These extra months were not wasted however, and were spent crossing oceans and delivering precious cargo with the team at Timbercoast.

Christiaan was one of many hundreds of thousands of shipping employees at this time who, operating under a cargo shipping licence, were unable to secure shore-leave and disembark from their ship. This made it impossible for them to return home to families for many months on end.

His forthcoming book 'Trade Winds: A Voyage to a Sustainable Future of Shipping', published by Manchester University Press is to be available in January 2023.

We had the pleasure of hearing a reading from an excerpt of Christiaan's book during this year's Sail Cargo Alliance meeting.

This is a book that we cannot recommend enough and will be a fascinating deep dive into the world of sail cargo, the companies involved around the world, and the potential it holds for the future.

MEET THE IDE MIN

More exciting news is that there is another cargo carrying sailing ship on the horizon...

Meet the sail cargo schooner Ide Min!

(Pictured: Sail cargo schooner Ide Min)

She is Dutch company Kaap Kargo's newly acquired ship and has been in refit for the last four months as she has been transformed from a passenger carrying ship into a sailing cargo ship.

We look forward to working with the Ide Min in the future.

WE ARE PLEASED TO BE A CARBON NEUTRAL BUSINESS

We have recently partnered with Carbon Neutral Britain to offset our remaining company carbon footprint, and plant 30 trees each month in sustainable projects around the world.

Our monthly subscription with Carbon Neutral Britain allows us to fully offset all daily business activities, planting 30 trees a month and removing 60 tonnes of CO2 each year.

This means that Shipped by Sail will have the most minimal detrimental impact on the environment as possible.

SURFERS AGAINST SEWAGE

12 million tonnes of marine litter and plastic enter our oceans every year.

We are proud to be supporting Surfers Against Sewage, who are an environmental charity and movement dedicated to the protection of our oceans and wildlife, building plastic-free communities, and inspiring future generations to look after our oceans.

By supporting Surfers Against Sewage, we are helping to save our blue planet. As a business, we can make a difference.

A little about our olive oil...

Our Nordouro Extra Virgin Olive Oil comes from a number of small family producers in the village of Sabrosa, Fernão de Magalhães, in the Trás-os-Montes region of north-eastern Portugal, high up the Douro river beyond the mountains.

This region, which produces olive oil of an exceptionally high standard on its steep slopes and schist soils, was awarded its own Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) in 1994 and has won many prizes across the world for the quality of its oils.

Our Nordouro Extra Virgin Olive Oil results from the combination of the best Cobrançosa and Galega olives together with the most careful oil extraction process. With a slightly peppery aroma of fresh olives, grass and citrus fruit, our olive oil is perfect for dipping, dressings and for cooking.

A little about our coffee...

Our Shipped by Sail Coffee is a typical Colombian coffee from Antioquia, the central Andean region, produced from Caturra, Castillo and Colombia varietals. It has a chocolate and caramel profile and is a good all-rounder, excellent for both filter and espresso.

The coffee is grown by a group of smallholder farmers from the village of Salgar, 100 km south-west of Medellin, at altitudes of between 1600m and 2000m above sea level. The coffee is 100% Arabica and hand-picked, carefully selected, fermented, washed and dried on the farms.

AND FINALLY...

As we near towards the end of another stormy and turbulent year, we are reflecting on the ups and downs with which we have been presented with over the course of this time.

We may have had to adjust our sails at times, and even set a whole new course on occasions to weather the occasional storm, but the outlook is looking good, and we are extremely positive for smoother, more gentle seas and fairer weather ahead.

Although there have been some challenges, we are feeling extremely positive for the future and for what 2023 holds for us, as we know that there is some really exciting news just over the horizon.

We can't wait to share it with you. And we can all be a part of it.

With Fair Winds and Following Seas

Will & Thomas
