Compassion for All Beings

OCTOBER Newsletter

Fall has rolled in to Central Oregon! I'm not sure who is happier, the volunteers or our rescued animals. It's been a tough summer with extreme heat and the threat of fire most weeks. We are so happy to have cooler days, cool evenings and clear blue skies. We love FALL, it's GOURDNESS! And for those that live close by, the animals are anxiously awaiting the arrival of your used Halloween pumpkins - they are a tasty treat!

This is our monthly newsletter. We appreciate you taking the time to read this. In this issue we will share videos, pictures and stories of our rescued farm animals. We will also provide an update on "your donations at work"!

Most months we focus on a specific farmed animal. Last month it was goats and this month it will be equines!

We currently have 9 equines at Harmony Farm Sanctuary. Their names are Cisco, Shorty, Lovebug, Penelope, Cowboy, Stella, Tucker, Cinder Red and Pancho.

Our equines have the freedom to roam and explore, form friendships, play, trail walk, be groomed and receive treats and hugs. We go to great lengths ensuring our horses are well stimulated and live a fulfilled life!

HORSES ARE AMAZING!

Horses have a nearly 360 degree field of vision and have bigger eyes than any other mammals that lives on land.

Horses have lightning fast reflexes.

Horses can sleep standing up or laying down.

Horses can live to be more than 30 years old.

Horses are herbivores.

Horses gallop at around 27 mph.

Horses use their ears, eyes and nostrils to express their mood. They also communicate their feelings through facial expressions.

Horses are social animals and will get lonely if kept alone, and they will mourn the passing of a companion.

Horses are amazing therapy animals. Horses can be an emotional mirror for humans. Horses provide immediate feedback to us about what we are communicating with our body language and movements. Since ancient times, horses have been believed to have an affinity for healing youth and an ability to reduce anxiety.

They are herd and prey animals, which mean that they have a strong emotional sense and use this sense as a survival tool; they feed off of and respond to other horses in the herd.

Horses and donkeys feel pain and love. They are emotional and sensitive animals. They are SENTIENT beings.

Please do not support horse drawn carriage rides that happen in big cities around the world. It is extremely stressful for these majestic animals to navigate thoroughfares jammed with impatient cabdrivers, loud buses, construction and hundreds of people. Sadly, accidents have occurred.  Spooked by all the commotion, horses have bolted through traffic and many have been killed. It is a grueling and sad existence for them.

Like animals in circuses and in zoos, these animals have become the means to an end for human profit. It is possible to find joy in and inspiration from animals without them having to suffer for it.  Come visit us on a sanctuary tour and we will show you!

This is Shorty!

Shorty is a Norwegian Fjord Gelding. Before coming to HFS he was used as a work horse in the logging industry. This is very evident in his slow gait.

Thankfully, Shorty now gets to enjoy retirement at HFS. Shorty likes to trail walk, hang out with his other horse friends, being sprayed with the hose on hot days and being groomed. He loves attention and boy does he get it when people come to visit.

Shorty lives with his besties LoveBug, Penelope and Cowboy. We currently feed Shorty a bowl of pellets on top of hay to keep him at his ideal weight. We love you, Shorty! Thanks for always putting a smile on the faces of those lucky enough to be in your presence. Here's to many more years of retirement!

This is Penelope!

Penelope is a miniature pony. She is now 8 years young. Her life had a sad beginning. Because of an irresponsible backyard breeder she was destined for Mexico to be slaughtered.

Thankfully, one of our partner rescue organizations, 3 Sisters Equine Refuge rescued her. Once rescued she was transported hundreds of miles across the US in a trailer with several other mini's sent to auction. Penelope was quarantined and then rehomed with us at Harmony Farm Sanctuary.

Her life is now a happy one. She lives with Shorty, LoveBug and Cowboy. Her days are spent eating (her favorite thing), playing, trail walking, being close to her adopted mom, LoveBug and providing therapy for humans. She loves attention and treats and usually finds both with the many volunteers who always stop by to say hi. Although she is small in size, her sassy personality is huge.

You are safe, Penelope and we will continue to care for you and love you the rest of your life!

HAY PRICES ARE SKYROCKETING! WE NEED HELP!

Hay is the most essential element of our animal care program. It is also our biggest expense. As we aim to restock we are hit with the reality that hay prices have more than doubled. This is due to the extreme drought, increased fuel prices, lack of water resources and now, fewer growers. Please help our efforts by making a donation to our hay fund below.
