About the EU plastics tax - worrying situation for future investments |
"Regulators don't seem to know what they want... they cry for a decrease of CO2 emissions and at the same time, instead of managing plastics, they want to tax plastic packaging, which shows by far the lowest CO2 emissions. Replacing plastic packaging by alternatives which do not perform from an environmental, food safety and economical perspective will not cut CO2 emissions, but rather cut employment. In the meantime, at Petcore Europe we continue to work on recycling. But who is going to invest in such uncertain times? That is the Shakespearean question - To be or not to be?" Message from Stephen Short, President Petcore Europe |
It almost feels like a decade since we held the Petcore Conference early February, yet it is only days since. Such is the speed of the market place. Since the conference when we were presenting significant developments for the PET value chain, we have heard more market news about the negativity towards single use plastics – namely in the EU “Green Deal” and “Plastics Tax on Non-Recycled Plastics”. The analogy of the “water running out the bath-tub” is a reality. Presently the Petcore Europe Leadership is focusing on three main issues – (1) The fundamentals of the Circular Plastics Alliance state of play for “Packaging” and “Monitoring”. Already two workshops in February have been attended; (2) Design for Recycling, the operation of the “EUROPEAN PET BOTTLE PLATFORM” to be the “best in class” for guidelines for recycling highlighting PET’s attributes and (3) Communications, still to be enhanced as early stages of how to develop various communication platforms are investigated. The second meeting of the “Communications Task Force” takes place before the end of February. All this said, its all words unless we have results. The request is to gain support from membership that Petcore Europe has the mandate to represent the value chain and continue to work relentlessly in ensuring PET is the packaging material of choice. Only by our membership’s mandate and support can the job be done. This will mean resources in several facets, yet by an aligned association the value for members must be appreciated as no company can do this alone. Plastics remains under attack and this is reality, only by relentless positive advocacy of the performance of PET can we ensure the business is sustainable. In summary we continue and request your continued support of the work. Stephen Short, Petcore Europe |

Petcore Europe Conference 2020 |
Under the theme “Circularity and Innovation - Shaping the future of PET”, the complete PET industry sector shared perspectives and strategies for a successful and even more circular future on the 5th and 6th of February. The Conference gathered more than 300 participants who shared their thoughts on the PET market as well as the plastics industry in the Circular Economy. "This engagement of all members, in combination with Petcore Europe's commitment to look for the entire sustainable packaging solution as a united industry, is a great value for all stakeholders involved. Petcore Europe's growth over the past two years is remarkable, we could welcome over 50 new members", said Christian Crepet, Executive Director of Petcore Europe. The next Petcore Europe Conference will take place in the first quarter of 2021. The exact date and place will be announced in the second half of 2020. PET white light barrier applications Special Industry Group |
Petcore Europe is pleased to announce the launch of a new Special Industry Group (SIG) for PET white light barrier applications. Currently, in some countries we notice a switch to PET packaging for dairy products. This potential increase in volume could justify separate recycling streams. The Circular Plastics Alliance and Essential Requirements of Packaging require full recyclability, deadlines are tight and it is time to move as soon as possible in the right direction to prove a concept of circularity. As a result of this Petcore Europe will hold a workshop on 28 April in Brussels to discuss technical guidelines to ensure recyclability, business models and closed stream proposals to convince EPRs as well as European and National Policymakers. If you are interested in active participation in the new SIG please contact us via management@petcore-europe.org. |

Opaque and functional bottles Working Group (formerly ODR) |
During the previous Petcore Europe Technical Committee Meeting, the Opaque and Difficult to Recycle (ODR) Working Group following a democratic vote changed the name to: Opaque and functional bottles WG. Furthermore, the new Chair of this WG is now Alessandra Funcia (Sukano). Gian De Belder (P&G), who had been Chair since the start of the WG, now is Co-Chair like Herbert Snell (Veolia). We are looking forward to continuing our work on circularity of PET with all of them. |
