Newsletter September 2, 2024 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

While in rabbinical school in New York, I served a community known as the Hebrew Association of the Deaf. It is a community of people who have reduced or no capacity to hear – which understandably made the recitation of the Shema difficult to lead. Why? Because it is known as the “watchword of our faith” but is really more of an instruction to: “Hear O Israel, Adonai is Our God, Adonai is One.” The instruction to hear is incredibly important in Judaism. So how could we lift up this commandment for those with hearing impairments?

Well, we lifted up the prayer in sign language and recognized that one might not have the capacity to hear, but one can still listen with ones heart.

As Hellen Keller famously said, “Every one of us is blind and deaf until our eyes are opened to our fellow men, until our ears hear the voices of humanity.”

This week, I visited the Nova Exhibit as it is open now in Los Angeles. My ears were pierced by the sound of techno music which turned into screams and cries of those murdered or taken hostage, and the wailing of their loved ones. The soundtrack of that exhibit echoes in my heart.

And this week, our ears were again pierced by the chilling news—the lives of six hostages had been taken by the terrorist organization Hamas. And because one of those hostages named Hersh Goldberg Polin z”l had dual citizenship with the United States, this sad news spread all over the airwaves. And today was the funeral of Hersh – and there again we heard the piercing sound of the cries of his loved ones as his mother delivered an incredible eulogy.

This comes after months and months of the cries of the families of the hostages falling on deaf ears from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. And, with the protests this weekend, we see the pain that spreads when leaders fail to listen to the voices of their constituents.

All of this is coming after 332 days of the bloody bombing and ground incursion into Gaza with more Israeli soldiers killed or taken hostage, and tens of thousands of Palestinians, most of them children, being brutally murdered, maimed, orphaned or starved. And we hear all of these anguished cries as well. And the stories of our Muslim-American friends whose family members have been murdered in our name haunts us. Deep in the recesses of our hearts, we hear and feel these cries, too.

We cannot ignore any of this pain. We bear the burden of being alive on this planet during these dire times, so it is our obligation to hear it all. Hear O Israel. Hear it all.

This week begins the month of Elul—the one month leading up to the high holidays. And it is the month in which it is customary to hear the sounds of the shofar (the ram’s horn). It’s cry sounds mournful and piercing. And it wakes us up to review our past year. And this year, it wakes us up to the questions: Whose voices have we not heard or been paying attention to? Whose voices need to be amplified?

We sound the shofar to hear the visceral feeling of our souls being aroused to our moral obligations. It is a mitzvah/ a commandment to do so. And yes, even the members of the Hebrew Association for the Deaf were able to fulfill this commandment as we had each member approach the shofar as I sounded it, they placed their hand on it to feel the vibrations of the horn.

You see, the commandment to “Hear O Israel” and the commandment to hear the holy sound of the shofar is not a commandment to literally hear with our ears. It is a commandment to hear with our hearts and souls.

These days I pray the Shema with new fervor and will hear the sound of the shofar with new purpose.  I lift up the hope that those in power open their souls to hear new voices in new ways to bring about peace for all. And I pray that I hear the still small voice within me calling me to find ways to help move things forward.

And in the meantime, we will hear the voices of the families of the hostages and the voices of those under attack in Gaza and the West Bank. May we listen not just with our ears but with our hearts.

This is how we’re keeping it sacred.

Together we’re #keepingitsacred...

MAZAL TOV, STEPHANIE & BEN!

Recently, Stephanie and Ben exchanged vows in a ceremony organized by Rabbi Miller in beautiful San Diego, CA. With the stunning backdrop of palm trees and bay views, the couple pledged their love and intentions for their marriage in front of family and friends. Rabbi Miller had known each of them and their families separately as youth, but the pair met via a dating app in San Diego as adults. The long-standing relationships of all heightened the joy of the celebration which included jubilant dancing deep into the night. The entire global Keeping It Sacred community wishes them a hearty Mazal Tov!

MAZAL TOV, NADIA & LIZ!

Earlier this summer, Nadia and Liz wed at The Paramour Estate atop the legendary Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. After offering heartwarming vows to one another, the couple shared toasts during the traditional Jewish seven wedding blessings while wrapped in the traditional Mexican wedding lasso. Guests enjoyed iconic city views and cocktails around the crystal blue pool with the celebration lasting into the night. The entire Keeping It Sacred community wishes the happy couple a marriage as beautiful as their gorgeous wedding!

MAZAL TOV, ALEX & DEAN!

Recently, Alex and Dean wed on the beautiful island of Catalina, off the California coast. Rabbi Miller officiated the ceremony with Aunt Myrna offering a beautiful blessing incorporating Alice Walker’s stunning poem, Desire. The amazing dog, Arthur, walked the groom down the aisle before the bride arrived. The pair circled one another, and exchanged heartfelt vows, both emphasizing the sense of sanctuary they appreciate with one another. A jubilant hora followed the breaking of the glass, and much celebrating ensued. The entire Keeping It Sacred community wishes them a hearty Mazal Tov!

REFLECTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS: HIGH HOLY DAYS WITH KITS

Join us for the High Holy Days!

Our Founder, Rabbi Heather Miller will bring texts, traditions, and teachings from the wisdom of the Sages into relevance today. And this year, she will again be joined by the talented and good-hearted Cantorial Soloist Rachel Rothman. Rachel holds her Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and fuels her spirituality and Judaism through music.

The entire lineup of services will be offered online including a Rosh Hashanah Seder, and a Morning Rosh Hashanah Service, as well as a hybrid (in person and online) Tashlich Service, Kol Nidrei Service, a Yom Kippur morning service, Yizkor, and Neilah service (See below to sign up). As always, services will be free of charge to all who wish to attend, but your contributions allow us to uphold this value of keruv/accessibility. As you reserve, please consider a meaningful gift to help us cover the costs of running this transformational programming and helping to support all of the sacred work we do.

MORE about Cantorial Soloist Rachel Rothman:

We are so blessed as a community to have the exquisite heartfelt musicality of Cantorial Soloist Rachel Rothman co-lead us this High Holy Day Season. She holds her Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has spent summers performing with opera festivals in Italy, and currently has an in-demand vocal studio where she teaches voice lessons privately. And, Rachel feels lucky to fuel her spirituality and Judaism through music. Rabbi Miller has known Rachel since 2008 and shares, “Rachel is an incredible talent, with a soul of sincerity, sensitivity, and sensibility. She is a gifted prayer leader with a range from participatory song to high art, having a voice trained by camp song leaders and conservatory instructors alike. I am incredibly excited to again co-lead this season's worship experiences with Rachel.”

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

JOIN our healing circle holding space for all looking for prayers for healing. This and EVERY THURSDAY -- at 10:30am PT/1:30pm ET.

Immediately following that: at 11am PT/2pm ET, join us as we jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old. We enjoy studying a page of Talmud every day and reviewing together every Thursday, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along. We enjoy participation from participants across the world who span the spectrum of race, gender, class, age, and connection to Jewish thought.

The rabbis could never have imagined such a wonderful group considering their thoughts!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."
