Newsletter April 2023

Hello! Welcome to the April edition of the Voices for Monash Newsletter. Keep an eye out in your local papers for our articles on Citizen Democracy and our upcoming Information Evening on the Voice to Parliament!

What are the issues you care about?

Survey Responses so far...

We have received a number of responses to our "Issues you care about" Survey since last month. So far, Climate Action and Environmental protection are the top priority as indicated by you, closely followed by Cost of living, Centrelink, Aged Care and Health.

There were also some interesting additional issues added to the list, including Media Reform, Mental Health, Agriculture, Innovation and Education.

This feedback is vitally important for us to know what we can do to best represent your voices to our federal member. If you haven't already, please take a minute to provide your feedback in our survey. This Survey will remain open for approximately 2 more months.

Recent Issues in Politics -

Safeguard Mechanism - With some valuable amendments from Community Independents and the Greens, the Government recently passed the Safeguard Mechanism Legislation. This will ensure Australia's largest emitters are contributing towards Australia's emissions reductions target. While it is not perfect, it will go a long way to reducing our net emissions and ensuring new and expanding fossil fuel projects meet certain regulations and cannot access government subsidies.  Read more about the Safeguard Mechanism here. Affordable Housing - As interest rates, rents and costs of living increase, affordable housing is becoming a critical issue in Monash. The Labor Government has proposed a $10 billion "Housing Australia Future Fund" to deliver social and affordable homes, among other initiatives. While the Bill has passed the House of Representatives, it was criticised by many as been vastly inadequate to address the housing shortfall. The Bill is currently due to be debated by the Senate in early May. Read more about the Housing Bill here.

Coming Up -

THE VOICE TO PARLIAMENT is dominating the news lately, with confusion and misinformation rampant - We are planning to hold an information evening in the coming weeks to provide clarity on the Voice proposal, and what it will mean to Australians. If you would like to be involved in organising this event, please get in touch!

NDIS - Independent Zoe Daniel and NDIS Minister, Bill Shorten, are hosting a free online community forum on 27 April 2023 regarding the the NDIS - What is working, what is not, and how it can be improved.

Voices for Monash acknowledges the traditional owners of the lands on which we meet and work, including the lands of the Boonwurrung, Bunurong and Gunai Kurnai people,  and other Aboriginal lands and nations within this country. We pay our respects to the elders of these lands, past and present, and acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded.
