SEPTEMBER SHOUTOUT

LET'S TALK ABOUT SEPTEMBER BEING THE NEW JANUARY

SEPTEMBER SHOULD BE THE TIME WE SHOUT "HAPPY NEW YEAR"....  ARE YOU WITH ME?

September is that magical time of year when transitions happen in many wonderful ways... Weather, leaves, schedules, timeframes, clothing, food, etc. It seems that the world gets ready to nestle in for a long winter's nap and in all honesty—I LOVE IT!

Many of you are gasping at this confession, but being a Midwest girl at heart, I’m used to change happening about every 3-4 months and while I love the California sunshine, I desperately miss the changes of season.  (Even after 20+ years of living in Cali)

So whether or not the weather or leaves remind you that things are changing, let me do it for you!  Autumn is a great time to take a look at what’s left in the year, do some planning, and settle into some different (more cozy) structure.

Whatever you’re doing this month, I hope your hearts are full and you enjoy reading more about how September is the new January!

5 Tips for Being Productive When Working at Home

Over the last 20 months, we’ve watched the workplace shift and restructure itself more than ever before. With so many folks finding themselves not just temporarily working remotely but it becoming their permanent situation, I wanted to share my top 5 tips for working at home. When the pandemic first hit and people had to pivot quickly, I delivered this as a workshop (on Zoom of course) to lots of work teams, but I think the messages are tried and true!

  1. Get dressed. Doing this simple task stands as a reminder to make sure you are maintaining some of your normal structure even if you’re just walking into the next room to work.
  2. Optimize your environment. Even if it’s the corner of the dining room table, make sure you have all you need and have a reliable place to “land” while working.
  3. Define your boundaries and schedule. Defining work time and "free" time becomes even more imperative while working from home. Feel more in control of your time by setting clear boundaries and schedules.
  4. Mix up the way you work. For example, you may try using your Hour of Power to get through that thing you’ve been procrastinating on or you could use the Pomadaro Effect. For this you set a timer to work for 25 minutes, follow it with a 5-minute break, and then repeat a few times in a row. Switch it up based on your current priority.
  5. Lastly, communicate! If you’re not overcommunicating, you’re not communicating enough. Online communication is very different than in-office communication—so dial in those 1:1’s, make sure you are clear on expectations, and double down on general daily communication.
