A Leaf from Our Playbook

Signs of Spring

Turf is greening up and growing again, herald of spring. Buds are swelling and breaking on shrubs, and plums, cherries and ornamental pears are beginning their bloom period. What does it mean? Mowing, for one thing. The ground is still wet with plenty of rain yet to fall, making mowing a challenge, but one that can’t be ignored as the grass begins to grow in earnest. You will see us on your property getting mowing and edging underway. But, when the weather is particularly wet we ask for your patience. Mowing on wet turf is hard on the grass and hard on the ground, leaving ruts or wheel depressions, and sometimes a ragged cut behind.

We’ll be finishing up the winter corrective pruning and bed cleaning. There is still time to freshen up your landscape beds by adding bark. Nothing adds curb appeal to a landscape as quickly and impressively as clean, fresh bark. If you’re looking for a visual way to advertise now for fall renters, or simply to lift the spirits of your customers and employees after an especially challenging winter, give us a call for an estimate on bark.

Irrigation System Activation

We’ve also begun backflow testing and activation for irrigation systems. This is the time to have your entire system checked to be sure it’s functioning correctly, and every zone is covering the areas they should. Our annual Irrigation Agreements include: spring pressurization, controller programming and battery replacement, zone testing and adjustment, fall water turn off and draining, insulating backflow devices where needed, and controller turn off. Backflow devices are required to be tested annually and is an optional add on to the agreement or can be done separately. We also do repairs, system adjustments, any of the tasks in the agreement and other irrigation service on a time and materials basis.  Call us at 541-686-3469 or email backflow@thompsonlandscapecompany.com.

Need color? This is the moment to consider adding seasonal flowers at your entrance and high visibility areas. We will inspect the location, measure it, check the soil to ensure it has adequate drainage and organic matter to support healthy plants, select appropriate plants for

the location and offer you a bid outlining the area to be planted and including the culture required during their season to maintain them. Once the bid is accepted, we’ll order the plants, pick them up, amend the area they are to be planted, plant them and then maintain them (weed, deadhead and fertilize every six weeks) through their season, then remove them at the end of the season. Even small areas of flowering plants can make a big difference if placed correctly and kept well maintained. High visibility areas, such as at the base of entrance signage and near office doors, are the most effective areas for color.

March Pollinators: Mason bees are native pollinators that look and behave differently from other bees. Both female and male mason bees are shiny, dark blue-green, and are about the same size as honey bees. Mason bees sting only if they are handled roughly or are trapped

under clothing. The adults have a short active period in western Oregon, seen from March to May or mid-June. Mason bees prefer to feed on nectar and collect pollen from fruit trees like apple, cherry, and pear. They also forage on dandelions and Oregon grape. Unlike the wide foraging honey bee, mason bees travel short distances from their nesting site for food (around 200 to 300 feet is normal).
