Dear Friends and Supporters, REACH Shirati is dedicated to providing rural Tanzanians access to quality education, improved health care, and sustainable community development programs. We can only accomplish what we do with the help of dedicated volunteers who travel with us every year to the Shirati-Nyamagongo region and work side-by-side with local residents on projects. In this newsletter we share some of the projects and activities you can participate in this summer. Plans are underway for our volunteer trip July 15 - August 3, Join Us! Travel with us to Shirati and learn firsthand how you can enable economic growth and empower families in this community. You do not need to attend for the full three weeks but a minimum stay of ten days in Shirati is best! We can help you coordinate with other wonderful excursions, such as a safari in the unforgettable Serengeti or a trip to beautiful Zanzibar. To learn more and apply to join us please contact our board member and volunteer coordinator, Laura Mason at lbmason.reachshirati@gmail.com – spots are filling up quickly! |

EDUCATION At Tina’s School, all classes are taught in English. You can help our students and teachers practice their English language skills, while participating in art projects, soccer games, or while assisting our teachers in the classroom. If you can play “Red Light, Green Light” or “Simon Says!” we need you! Tina’s School begins at the pre-kindergarten level, and goes up to middle school, so there is always plenty to do. |

HEALTH CARE There are many opportunities to learn and participate in our health care projects. You can make a difference in so many ways including: - Delivering donated toys and comfort items to children and families in the pediatric ward.
- Bringing baby clothes and blankets to new mothers and infants in the maternity ward.
- Assisting in our Hospital Food Project by bringing meals to hospital patients.
- Attending rounds and learning about local health issues and challenges.

WE ESPECIALLY NEED HELP WITH A NEW HEALTH CARE PROJECT! Last summer, for the first time, our volunteers brought 45 youngsters from Tina’s School to Shirati Hospital and helped local health care providers perform health screenings and check-ups. Only 3 of these children had ever seen a doctor before! The medical exams revealed that every single child was suffering from one or more of the common diseases and conditions in the area: scabies, worms, malaria or UTIs. All of these young patients received medication appropriate to their diagnosis. Our goal is to make sure that every one of our students has a chance to see the doctor and get the medical treatment they need! |

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT You can help us evaluate water quality and access to clean water by testing the water in our rainwater tanks and our well. There are opportunities to join a local women’s collective to prepare meals or bake bread for community distribution. Or you can attend discussions about women’s empowerment and financial opportunities, and meet with adolescents who are learning about reproductive health and safety. |

Welcoming Dr. Chirangi Back in California, we are looking forward to the annual visit of Shirati Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Bwire Chirangi. Dr. Chirangi studied medicine at Bugando Medical School in Tanzania, and is currently earning a doctorate in Public Health from Maastricht University in the Netherlands. He specializes in maternal and child health, the development of community health programs, and emergency medicine. This will be Dr. Chirangi’s 12th trip to the Bay Area, where he has enjoyed the opportunity to meet with local physicians and public health researchers, and to learn about the latest medical techniques and equipment. Each year, our friends and partners at MedShare host Dr. Chirangi, and donate surplus medical supplies and equipment to Shirati Hospital. |
