Rad ReflectionsBoard and Volunteer Service as a Fundraiser
So you're a fundraiser, asking people to volunteer and give to your organization. But do you know what it's like to be in those shoes? Here are some benefits from partaking in your own service:
As insiders, much about our orgs or nonprofits is obvious to us. That's not always the case to volunteers or board members, partners who are deeply invested in our success. Sitting in those seats can help you find blind spots about how you communicate and work with volunteers as a fundraiser.
While I have mixed feelings about nonprofits asking staff to give, as a fundraiser you need to know explicitly what the donor experience is. Make sure your name is on all solicitation lists and that you make test gifts (which can be refunded) so you know firsthand what donors are experiencing. Giving to other orgs/causes you care about will inspire you with new ideas as well as practices to avoid.
Board or volunteer service can be great professional development and networking opportunities. As a nonprofit professional, those experiences and connections can be valuable for furthering your career in terms of what and who you know.
