Disruption is Easier Than You Think!Did you know there are -- 2 ways to disrupt -- an industry; the hard-way, or the easier-way? A lesser known approach (the easier-way), but far more effective and quicker to market, is simply to "blend" existing offerings (products or services) in new ways to create an entirely new offering or category much like a painter mixing and blending colors from a palette. This is referred to as the Innovator's Palette. This easier-way is a low-risk approach to embracing innovation. Think Cirque de Soleil or Amazon. For example, even though the circus market was in decline for several decades, Cirque de Soleil disrupted the marketplace by simply dropping expensive animal acts while integrating theatric performances to create blue ocean opportunity (see BOSC below). Nothing truly "new" to see here except a unique and differentiated "blend" of existing offerings that delights customers because they perceive it as a new offering. In the second example, Amazon was able to disrupt the IT industry by simply but creatively "blending" 3 existing technologies (browsers, credit card processing, and hardware virtualization) to create the "cloud computing" category which now dominates the IT industry with a lower cost structure than traditional IT (see BMC below). Note that in both examples nothing new was created from scratch, rather, a new offering was created by simply combining existing offerings in new and novel ways in much the same way an author would use existing words to create a new novel! If you think of new "technologies" as new "words", then you can create a new offering (or novel) by creatively "blending" new technologies such as AI, IoT, Blockchain, Quantum Computing, VR, etc. to "pivot" your business model and create blue ocean or new uncontested market space. This approach has tremendous potential to help your business thrive rather than just survive! |
