This month's pick for Student of the Month is Lily A word from her Owner: "Lily blessed our lives on April 16, 2022. She was 15 weeks old and weighed only 3 lbs. She is now almost a year and half old and a whopping 7 lbs. She is such a happy, bouncy, lovable ball of joy. Unfortunately, she was always too excited about meeting new people. She would bark and jump for joy at every opportunity to see others. (Humans and animals alike). Our classes at Dogsmartz have really helped her. My best friend has a therapy dog. She talks so fondly about her experiences that almost as soon as we got Lily, we wanted her to be a therapy dog. It seems that she was born for it. We brought Lily to Dogsmartz to start the therapy dog process. |

"We have had such a positive experience. Karen has been her instructor for most of her classes. She is absolutely wonderful. Honestly, every staff person that we have dealt with has been so nice and helpful. Thank you, Dogsmartz Unleashed, for blessing our lives. We are so excited about all of the adventures ahead in Lily’s journey to be a therapy dog. Here is a list of the classes she has taken so far: Beginner Obedience Confidence Building Intermediate Obedience Therapy Dog Prep Advanced Obedience Indoor Games Canine Good Citizens Polite Greetings" A word from the trainer who chose this pup for student of the month: "This is the havanese we posted in the pink tutu for Valentine's Day, too. . . or green for St. Pats -- she's always dressed for the occasion! Lily will be testing for therapy dog certification very soon." - Karen |

Border Collie Mix searching for a forever family near Youngstown, OH Meet Alphie: Hi guys Alphie here! My foster mom wanted me to tell you all about how awesome I am! I came into my fosters home and she already had 3 dogs but I fit in and play super awesome with all of them! I’m also very respectful to the super old dog that hangs out with us! It took me no time to figure out the routine and get comfortable in my temporary home. I’m crate and house trained. We are working on some impulse control and I would love to go to training classes with my new family! I’m very confident when I meet new people and dogs but I do need another playful dog friend to keep me company.
Some of my favorite things are wrestling with my sister and teasing my brother. They are showing me how to play with toys so I’m still learning all about those. We love to play enrichment games and I love love love getting rewarded with treats for being a good boy! I do love to stretch my legs and go for a good run in the yard. So if you are looking for a hiking companion have your people call my people!
Please if interested in adopting Alphie head to everydogmattersrescue.com to apply, inquires do not count as an application. |

July 2023: Fear Free Focus By Karen Becker Soaping up Snoopy, Fear Free Style ~Karen Becker, CPDT-KA, Ph.D and DSU’s Therapy Dog Prep trainer Let’s talk FEAR FREE BATH TIME! If bath time is filled with signs of stress for Snoopy, this article is for you. Stress signals include: panting, tail between legs, excessive blinking, nose licking, scratching, mouthing, or excessive yawning We will break down bath time baby steps into steps to start today before Snoopy needs a bath. STEP 1 – DRY RUNS to “normalize” getting into the bath location After determining where you’ll bathe Snoopy, be sure you have a non-slip surface for the bottom of the tub, shower, sink, etc. Create a space that allows Snoopy to feel safe. Place the non-slip surface in the location (we’re just going to call it the “tub” for the sake of discussion) and without any other bath-time prep (such as assembling towels, and shampoo), lure Snoopy into the tub. This might mean adding steps or non-slip to climb into the tub if Snoopy is too small to jump or walk in. Then let Snoopy safely leave the tub. Continue reading by clicking the button below |

Private Training Sessions Privates can be done for specific behavior issues such as but not limited to fear, anxiety, aggression or if basic training (obedience/manners) is desired. The initial private session is 90 minutes long. Based upon the information provided to us on our behavior history form, we will prepare a preliminary plan. Upon arrival, we will first observe the situation, implement management changes and teach new skills sets. After the visit, we will provide a typed Behavior Treatment Plan for you to keep and use as a blueprint to work from. For any behavior issues, we will also send letter to your Veterinarian (if you approve) to advise them of our observations and our plan moving forward. We will work closely with your veterinarian in cases that require this. The plan will be adjusted accordingly based upon our observations and may be further adjusted as we discuss progress in the weeks ahead. You will have access to us for the lifetime of your pet after your visit via phone, text or email for any questions and/or concerns. We request you provide us updates weekly or however often is needed via phone, email or text. If you attend a private session at our facility, we do require your dog to be vaccinated with the following: Rabies, Bordetella, Distemper and a negative fecal. |
