Aurora City Council Newsletter

Welcome to my periodic newsletter where I'll keep you up-to-date with what's going on with Aurora City Council - what we've voted on, what we've studied and more.

The year keep flying by! Snow will be here before we know it!

City Council has worked hard to make our city safer, make our city a friendlier place to do business and make our city the best place to raise a family in Colorado.

Here are a few updates:

Saving energy and money this winter!

Looking to save money on winter energy bills? Here are a few tips from Xcel Energy:

  • Let the Sunlight In & Keep the Cold Out:  Open blinds to take advantage of the sun's warmth during the day but close them at night to insulate against the cold air outside.

  • Make Sue Exterior Doors Are Fully Closed:  A major source of a home’s heat loss is from exterior doors that are left cracked open or not latched.

  • Use Ceiling Fans to Your Advantage: During colder months, run ceiling fans clockwise, so warm air near the ceiling is forced down.

  • Keep Filters Clean:  Dirty furnace filters reduce airflow, requiring your furnace to work harder and use more energy. Change the filter once a month during the winter to reduce your heating costs by 5-15%.

The Search for Aurora's Next Fire Chief

Following the retirement of Aurora Fire Rescue Chief Fernando Gray, the city hired CPS HR Consulting to assist with the recruitment of Aurora's next Fire Chief.

To kick off the search, the feedback of the Aurora community is very valuable as CPS HR Consulting begins the outreach process looking for high-caliber candidates and the ideal fit for this role.

The survey deadline is 5 p.m. (MDT) Friday, Oct. 21. Click here to provide your input.

The city of Aurora contracted Griffin & Strong P.C., a public policy consulting firm, to determine whether there is a significant statistical disparity between the availability of qualified, Minority, Women and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (MWDBE) and the utilization of such businesses in the city's procurement and contracting processes.

Here are a few City Council Policy items of note recently:

  1. I recently sponsored an ordinance to define catalytic convertors as secondhand property. This will require purchasers of catalytic convertors to gather and report information about the seller of a convertor. By making these harder to sell, it will act as a theft deterrent since we have since such a significant increase in thefts of catalytic convertors in Aurora in recent years.

  2. In the next few weeks, I am sponsoring a resolution to rename the Aurora City Council Chambers after former Mayor Paul Tauer, who recently passed away. Mayor Tauer served Aurora for decades, both on City Council and as Mayor, in addition to the great work he and his wife Kate did in our community. Paul also oversaw significant growth and expansion of Aurora, including attracting the world-class medical campus we have in NW Aurora. If supported by my colleagues, the name will become the Paul Tauer Aurora City Council Chambers.

  3. To address the rise in retail theft, City Council recently passed an ordinance requiring a mandatory three day jail sentence for retail theft over $300. While I do have some concerns about mandatory minimum penalties for their impact on court workload and disparate outcomes for some communities, this is a signal that theft in Aurora will be taken seriously and we value our retail businesses.

  4. I recently brought forward an ordinance, co-sponsored by CM Danielle Jurinsky, to place a moratorium on the introduction of new sedatives by Aurora Fire Rescue while two former firefighters stand trial for murder following the death of Elijah McClain. Firefighters have expressed concern to me that they may end up on trial as well, and don't want to use sedatives for non-medial reasons. While the ordinance did receive majority support, it is currently on hold while we negotiate with the Aurora Medical Director for updated protocols that will keep our firefighters and the community safe.

  5. Aurora has an ongoing search to hire a new Police Chief following the termination of Vanessa Wilson by City Manager Jim Twombly. Unfortunately, the process that was agreed to by all of City Council was attacked when the three final candidates weren't what certain members were looking for. I’m disappointed and sad for the city I love that we are struggling to fill this position-Aurora is a great city and we owe our residents a great police chief. I’m disappointed at those critiquing the process, the same process used before, and agreed to this time. I remain committed to ensuring we hire a dynamic leader to lead the men and women of the Aurora Police Department.

I can hardly believe it but it's time for the 2023 Campaign! I would love to have your support - every dollar raised goes towards getting our message out to voters!
