I haven’t even left on my trip to Europe yet and I’m already taking pictures… of the money! The €5 note depicts a classical stone arch on the front and a masonry aqueduct on the reverse. The €10 note shows a multi-layered stone arch on the front and a bridge with stone quoin columns on the reverse. I’ve learned that all EU bank notes depict masonry bridges, arches, or doorways in different European architectural styles up to the fifth century. The designer of the currency, Robert Kalina, originally intended to show real monuments, but for political reasons, the art is theoretical. I just think it’s cool that 27 European countries embrace their architectural history by having masonry-themed money! #Euro #Currency #Money #Masonry #Architecture
Excellent observation!
Thanks for sharing! Did the designer ever indicate what monuments were under consideration?
Put your money into masonry buildings. It’s long term and strong. 😊🧱
You definitely need a vacation if you’re taking photos of buildings on currency. Have a great trip👍
It projects the image of solid permanent structure !
I was thinking of you and Jeff Diqui as I floated under what was ostensibly the longest single span brick arch at the Maidenhead railway Bridge. Enjoy the EU. The UK was inspiring for ideas for the #brickwork for the #envisionunlimited #dreamhouse CILA.
I never noticed that
interesting remark, I have been using the euros for about 20 years, I never noticed the masonry structures!
I have used these bills for so many years and never paid attention to those details. Very interesting observations, indeed! Although abstract, the aqueduct is characteristic of the Roman Empire and the bridge comstruction of the Ottoman Emprire - perhaps an intentional gesture to highlight economic and technological achievements of the root European civilizations that tie together the west and the east, a symbol that a unified economy can achieve similarly unprecedented advancemenents. :)
