Spring sum-up

At CPI we are embracing the theme of spring, which is a time to celebrate hope and new beginnings, so we have plenty of exciting updates to ensure you have a spring in your step.

From rescuing a wild vulture from being sold at a market to fundraising to provide emergency treatment to animals following a devastating fire, the last four weeks have been busy for the CPI team and partners.

To celebrate International Women's Month, we spotlighted four inspiring women who have dedicated their lives to saving suffering street animals.

These included Rica Yambasu, a CPI Animal Ambassador from Freetown, Sierra Leone and CPI veterinary advisor, Rebecca Hampson, who is researching the link between the challenges faced by female farmers and animal welfare.

CPI is proud of our partnership with grassroots organisations and felt it was important to celebrate two incredible women we work closely with -

Vijayakumari Pillai who founded PATH last spring in Kajang, Malaysia and the founder of MARS in Chennai, India, Sarah Iyer.

CPI & SPCAI

providing emergency medical treatment to the animals of the Susan's Bay fire

On March 24th, a devastating fire raged through the overcrowded slum area of Susan’s Bay in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The disaster has left up to 7,000 people homeless and without basic needs. Over 400 people were injured and countless are still missing, including children.

Animals are often the voiceless victims of tragedies and we believe it's crucial to provide emergency treatment and aid to animals who have been injured and left to fend for themselves as a result of deadly disasters.

An Assessment of Animal Impact carried out by CPI and Freetown City Council discovered almost 200 dogs in need of help. However, it's likely this number will rise due to the lack of food and shelter caused by the fire.

CPI and SPCAI aim to provide emergency treatment to the animals impacted by the disaster.

CPI has been granted funding from SPCAI to provide urgent care and support to animals living in Susan’s Bay following the fire.

We plan to treat dogs, cats (and likely some pigs!) over 10 days with Dr. Bangura and his team, and the Animal Welfare Officers of Freetown City Council.

All animals will receive the basic minimum of a full health check, de-worming treatment, vitamin paste, anti-parasite bath/ear clean if necessary.

Any sick or injured animals will be treated accordingly.

We will also be providing rice donations to families.

New month, New updates

Saving Walter

CPI is passionate about helping all animals - not just dogs and cats!

CPI co-founder Sea Ramanat rescued a wild vulture from being sold at a market in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

He was immediately treated, fed and fostered by Sea who named him Walter. He has since recovered and has been released back into the wild.

New beginnings for our latest rescues

Already this month, CPI co-founder, Sea Ramanat, has rescued three puppies found wandering the busy streets of Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Berklee, Leo and Chloe were all suffering from skin conditions. Tiny Chloe (pictured) also has nose and stomach wounds.

All three pups are being treated and fostered until they are matched to their forever home with a local family.

Meet Sarah Iyer: Founder of MARS

Two years ago, Sarah Iyer created MARS but her passion to help animals began when she was a child growing up in Bombay, India.

She said: "I was brought up by three kind and strong women - my mother, grandmother and aunt. I watched all of them be kind to animals and go to any lengths to help them, it left a deep impression on me.

"If my mother saw a starving dog, she would stop her car and search for a restaurant or shop to buy food. It was her dream to start a dog shelter.

"There is a strong need in me to nurture, partly because I lost both my mother and aunt within one year. My grief has kept me hooked on elevating the suffering of animals and making their lives better easing my pain. Giving animals love, joy and happiness and keeping them safe makes my life worth living."

Remembering the rescue which spurred her to pursue her mother's dream, Sarah said: "It all started on the first day of 2014 when we rescued puppy called PK who was hit by a car and suffered broken legs and a fractured spine. After treatment and plenty of love, he fully recovered within a month."

Sarah, who has experience in psychology, working with children with additional needs and counselling brain trauma patients, said she is particularly passionate about helping disabled and paraplegic dogs.

She said: "The next step for MARS is to build a shelter with a focus of rehabilitating paraplegic animals. We also plan to build a hospital which will give free treatment to street animals, have access to a 24/7 animal ambulance and provide awareness programmes in schools and universities.

"My goal is to see every street dog not only in Chennai, but all of India to be vaccinated and neutered."

MARS was created in 2019 and provides vaccinations, neutering, re-homing and animal health programmes in Chennai, India. So far the charity has rescued 500 dogs and financed 200 sterilisations.

I want to help

At CPI, we are proud to directly work with grassroots organisations so 100% of donations go straight to helping vulnerable street animals.

This means no donations are spent on salaries or administrative costs.

Our team contributes their own time and in many cases, their own money, so animals can fully benefit from your generosity.
