If you do any vegetable gardening from seed, January and February means the arrival of seed catalogs and dreams of summer crops. Even if you are not a gardener, winter is often a time for making plans and looking forward to warmer weather. My work from this January's hibernation is eagerly looking towards spring.

Up

I got a package of vintage wood type this winter from a friend who was cleaning out an attic. Lining them up like a scrabble game I looked at what I had to work with and settled on 'up'. At first I was thinking of doing something sky related, but the seed idea quickly replaced it. Plants at times can seem unstoppable, they will rise up out of the hardest ground. Words and the press can support us or weigh us down, inevitably we push though either way with new growth.

Bee Keep

I often spend January revisiting my shelves of materials. When I saw this piece with all the holes in my box of boxes, it reminded me of bee houses I had seen made from bundles of bamboo tied together. I thought it would make a great body for a figure with bees inside and out. The head and arms are carved from bass wood and the bees are made with clay, wire, and paper.

Red Top

If you want to look forward to the arrival of our feathered friends, get them house. I just put five new birdhouses on the website. This one is sized for wrens. The roof is a piece of tin from a box used for milk deliveries. The perch is an old kitchen cabinet handle.

Thanks for taking the time to follow me and my work. I look forward to a time when I can engage with many of you in person at an event.
