Check out what we've been up to

Welcome to our first newsletter!

From now on you will be among the first to hear the most important news and updates happening across the East of England Trauma Network.

Newsletters will be issued every two months.

Meet Matt, our new Network Manager

My name is Matt Targett. I am a trained Emergency Department Nurse, Emergency Nurse Practitioner and have worked as an ED Matron for the last 5 years in Barnet, North London but my passion has always been in major trauma and the systems that support them.

Over the last 5 years I have worked with the North East London and Essex Trauma Network supporting them with nursing advice and network peer reviews. I was also a member of the Pan London Trauma Nursing Group since 2012 and the Vice Chair for 18 months up to April 2020 where I stepped down knowing I was moving to the East of England Trauma Network.

In October 2019 I successfully completed a PGDip in Trauma Sciences at Queen Mary University London which encompassed the clinical and theoretical aspects of major trauma. This was an international cohort of students where we were able to draw upon each other’s experiences and knowledge of other international trauma networks.

Returning to my local region after working in Kent and London is like coming home where I can bring my experience, skills and knowledge to the network.

We cannot write this newsletter without reference to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our immense thanks to all involved in the care of trauma patients for the continuing high quality care delivered in more challenging circumstances during this period. We hope that you are all recovering and taking time to look after yourselves and your loved ones. In that first wave, all parts of the Network escalated their activity aiming to continue to best manage major trauma patients.

For example:

- a temporary change to the pre-hospital trauma triage tool to bring patients most in need to the Major Trauma Centre

- enhanced inter-hospital transfer services in the region

- strengthening our rehabilitation clinical team and ensuring a regional and national focus on this

- closer daily links with other clinical networks, hospitals and NHSE Incident Management

- daily regional and national sitrep reports created looking at numbers and capacity across the country

- a new National Trauma Network system was created linking all networks

Our data is yet to be fully processed for the period, but we know that the number of major trauma patients was significantly lower than normal across the entire pathway. It has not taken long for those numbers to rise to their pre-Covid levels. The Network and our Trauma Leads have since been working hard to plan for the big challenge of a second wave over the winter period with likely significant capacity challenges. We can’t do it without your support and ideas - speak to your Trauma Lead.

Updating TEMPO

The Trauma East Manual of Operations and Procedures (TEMPO) describes the approved processes, pathways and management of patients with suspected major trauma in the East of England.  It is intended for use by clinicians and those involved in the care of major trauma patients and aims to reflect current best practice.

We are in the process of updating it and looking for contributors who would be happy to review and provide ideas and feedback. If you think you could help us or would like to get more information, please get in touch with us at trauma.east@nhs.net.
