Naidoc Week 7-14 July, 2019 The National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Committee Week is about voice, treaty and truth. Let's work together for a shared future in a way that acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia's democracy. Many fine Indigenous authors have hailed from WA., including Kim Scott, Helen Ing, Jack Davis, Sally Morgan, and Doris Pilkington. I'm sure this list is incomplete. Let's take this occasion to honour all of the fine Indigenous authors in Australia. |

Some personal stories demand to be told but writing them is often difficult. Honouring these experiences to learn about oneself can be highly beneficial. Award-winning author A.R. Levett draws upon research to demonstrate the benefits of writing for self-discovery, the uses of catharsis, disclosure, symbolic repair, and bearing witness, and the possibilities of re-authoring through experience. Please note, A.R. Levett is not a therapist and is not qualified to help you deal with traumatic experiences. Bookings & Enquiries: andrew@thestorymentor.com.au Limited Places. Presented by Amanda Joy winner of the 2016 Peter Porter Poetry Prize 27 July 2:00–4:00pm Mattie Furphy House, Swanbourne Using James Hillman’s essay “A Snake is Not a Symbol” as a centering point, participants will be guided through ways of reconfiguring their associations with various lifeforms to reawaken astonishment and wonder over their ‘presences’ We will question the mystery of ‘isness’. Are we as writers gluttonous taxidermists or gentle excavators of the unique cadences of plants and animals (including human creatures)? Discuss the possibility of formal poetic structure as a mirroring of the natural world and ‘rewild’ our words. Within this workshop we will look at examples in the work of John Ryan, Robert Hass, Judith Beveridge, Nina Cassian, Robert Adamson, Basho and others. We will aim to produce at least one piece of writing each and develop some new techniques of looking and transcribing by the conclusion of the workshop. Members $20/ Non members $25. To book ring 9384 4771 or email fellowshipaustralianwriterswa@gmail.com |
