MYAN WA March Forum: R U Legal Workshop

For MYAN WA's first forum of the year we are excited to offer you an R U Legal workshop run by Legal Aid W.A. This session is presented from the perspective of a criminal lawyer and uses real-life examples to show legal consequences to young people. The workshop will focus on the legal rights of young people, police powers and other topics including domestic violence. The focus of the workshop will be on the unique circumstances of young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Following the workshop there will be morning tea and then a group discussion activity to explore issues experienced by migrant and refugee young people in the legal and justice system.

MYAN WA youth catch up
MYAN WA holding a youth focus group for young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds to talk about issues important to them. In this session we will brainstorm what MYAN WA youth events they would like to see organised and how we can improve in 2020.

Book a Shout Out Speaker - Final months left

Do you need an inspirational speaker for your next school event or assembly?Shout Out have you covered. Shout Out is an opportunity for young people to redress the balance and present their stories and experiences to audiences that may not usually have the chance to hear them. Our speakers are from refugee and migrant backgrounds and have been trained to deliver fresh, engaging and thought-provoking perspectives for a range of settings across WA and are aged between the ages of 18-25.

 

Our speakers present on topics from their perspectives and experiences and address topics including but not limited to: Multiculturalism, Education, Refugee experience, Leadership, Discrimination, Identity and Belonging.

 

Through funding from the Department of Home Affairs MYAN WA has received funding to provide FREE Shout Out speaking engagements to public schools, not-for-profit organisations and local government authorities. FREE speaking engagements are for a limited time only and finish Monday 30th March.

Youth waste reduction consultations

Are you are young person (aged 17 to 25)? Then come and share your ideas on waste reduction. The Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA) is hosting the final consultation for the new pilot project—Youth Educating about Waste (YEW). These consultation sessions will focus on identifying young people's attitudes around waste, barriers that young people experience with engaging in waste reduction and ways that the YEW project can support young people to reduce their waste. You don't need to know anything about waste to participate an will receive a $40 Coles/Myer gift card for your input!

Workshops

Family Law 101 and Protecting yourselves in your relationships

This two-part seminar will cover issues related to family law, including property matters such as options for dispute resolution and determining who gets what, and parenting matters such as how to protect children from risk and harm. The second part of the session covers ways to better protect ourselves in our relationships, including estate planning, asset protection and violence and restraining orders.

How's Your Haal? Community Conversations
How's Your Haal? (HYH) is a community conversation initiative that aims to empower young people from CaLD backgrounds to tackle the taboo of mental health and to share their experiences with their communities. HYH will be running a series of Taboo Talks in North, South and Central locations in February and March.

Drive Safe in WA workshop

The Drive Safe in WA workshop is designed to provide participants with an overview of safe driving practices, essential road rules, how to get an Australian driver’s license and the process of purchasing a car. Participants may be offered the opportunity to meet with qualified driving instructors and receive information about financial supports to assist them in meeting their goal. Grants

Australian Government Community Languages grants

Applications are open for the Australian Government's new $10 million Community Languages Multicultural Grants program. Around 1,000 community language schools across Australia may be eligible for the grants. Applications for the first stream of funding are now open and will close on Monday 17th February. A second stream of funding will open in early 2020, with up to $25,000 available for projects that support the community language school sector.

Cultural Diversity Officer

There is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced professional to join the Family and Community Development team at the City of Cockburn. The role involves developing, strengthening and maintaining community identity by building the capacity of the City's residents. The Cultural Diversity Officer will be a key point of contact in strengthening links and facilitating communication between the City and its culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Applications close 6pm, Wednesday 12th February.

The Multicultural Health Diversity Cafe is held twice each year and brings together service providers who work with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds. Their recent report talks about improving health equity for young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
