CRC Newsletter October 2024

From today we are officially a Community Interest Club

A huge thank you to our Management Committee

for all the work they put in to make this happen.

The purpose of this active rowers meeting is to sign in the new committee.

Thank you to those who have already come forward and signed up to help, sadly there are still areas of the club lacking representation.

It takes a full committee to make the club run smoothly, with unfulfilled roles the pressure on those who have volunteered becomes unfair.

We had a tremendous response to our request for help for our Taster day last month and the subsequent support and time members are giving to help bring these new members along is wonderful to see and exactly the tone we wish to set for the upcoming season.

What we are missing is a Captain to guide and grow this energy for the year.

I know some of you are considering taking on a responsibility but have not yet come forward. The roles we have no names by are;

Club Captain

Men’s Captain

Men’s Vice Captain

Women’s Captain

Master Representative

Junior coordinator

Water Safety Advisor

Public Relations Officer

We are also looking for a Maintenance Coordinator.

Please use the time between now and Saturday to ask around, find out more about these roles, is there someone in the club you would be happy to share a role with? I am happy to help with any questions you may have.

Memberships are new due for renewal, please not we now have a new bank account, please email Jenny Gould at enquiries@christchurchrowingclub.co.uk if you need these details.

Itchen Junior Regatta

Itchen organised the annual Junior regatta in a break in the bad weather on Saturday. It started off a bit chilly but warmed up during the day and the lack of much wind made the conditions pretty good for the juniors, especially those in their first race or first race in a single. Fabulous club spirit shown by the juniors...

Congratulations to Josh Brangan and the GBR crew for winning the gold medal at the World U23 rowing championships in Canada. Leading pretty much from the start, they controlled the race despite a spirited charge from the Australians at the finish. Josh started his rowing at Christchurch moving through the junior system before moving to St. Edwards School (Teddies) and is currently studying in Harvard. Well done to all the British crews at this event.

Beach Sprints will be in the Olympics next time round in LA. The World Championships were held in Genoa, Italy. Clare Jamison won the silver medal in the Women’s Senior sculls. Caitlin Lockey in her first international event reached the quarter finals in the Junior Women’s double scull. Tom Walker (our current European bronze medallist) just missed out on the knockout stages of the Men’s Junior single. Xavier Jebb, who travelled as the reserve, has picked up valuable experience as he has another year in the Junior category.

The 30th British Rowing Tour

We tackled 67kms and 13 locks on the upper Thames from Oxford to Reading over 2.5 days. There were 17 touring quads filled with rowers from all over the country. I was the only rower from Christchurch...
