Below is a list of upcoming ATDN courses/meetings:

January 9 | 2 - 5 PM | CCRS Math 101A - Introduction & Key Instructional Shifts

CCRS Math 101A - Introduction and Key Instructional Shifts is Part 1 of a 2-part workshop series. The College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Adult Education are a set of academic standards that, when met by students, prepare adult learners for success in college, technical training program(s), and work. Participants will become familiar with the standards and how to navigate them in this session. We will investigate the Key Instructional Shifts mathematics instruction must make for students to succeed. The importance of taking the time to delve deeply into the concepts at the heart of mathematics will be illustrated. By making connections between mathematical concepts, activities will encourage ways to see mathematics as more than discrete sets of rules to be memorized. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to use standards when planning math instruction.

After CCRS Math 102B, participants will create a standards-based unit plan that integrates both the Key Instructional Shifts and the Standards for Mathematical Practice with priority content standards.

Audience: GED/CDP/ABE Math Teachers

Objectives: Name a big idea of mathematics, describe the focus of a level appropriate for the students you teach, describe how the Shifts influence the structure of the CCR content standards and the order in which standards should be taught, and give an example of coherence building across levels.

January 18 | 2 - 5 PM | CCRS Math 101B - Key Instructional Shifts

CCRS Math 101B - Key Instructional Shifts is Part 2 of a 2-part workshop series. By making connections between mathematical concepts, activities will encourage ways to see mathematics as more than discrete sets of rules to be memorized. The content standards calling for a balance of conceptual understanding, fluency with procedures, and application to real-world and mathematical contexts will be explored. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to use standards when planning math instruction.

Participants must have completed the in-person CCRS Math 101A – Introduction & Key Instructional Shifts before attending Math 101B. After CCRS Math 102B, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to use standards when planning math instruction and will create a standards-based unit plan that integrates both the Key Instructional Shifts and the Standards for Mathematical Practice with priority content standards.

Audience: GED/CDP/ABE Math Teachers

Objectives: Give an example of coherence building between domains, evaluate a classroom resource for Rigor, especially how well it supports students’ conceptual understanding or application of mathematics skills, and explain one new way the Key Instructional Shifts indicate a need to shift an aspect of your instruction, and capture ideas for a unit plan that demonstrate a Shift in instructional practice

Why reinvent the wheel when there are thousands of open educational resources (OER) that can be easily integrated into your curriculum? In this training, we will discuss how to find OERs and best practice tips for managing your OER resources.

Goal: Identify OER sites and best practices for managing OER resources.

Audience: Program Facilitators and Teachers

Objectives: Discuss the benefits of OER sites, identify OER sites, and discuss best practices for managing OER resources

Announcements...

As we continue with the CSDE two-year sustainability plan, we move into the second phase of compiling stipend-based, local practitioner SIA Math and ELA Curricula Review teams. By sharing expertise and collective wisdom, the teams will collaborate to:

✦ Identify existing curriculum and resources used by Adult Education agencies throughout Connecticut through a statewide survey;

✦ Evaluate/analyze curriculum and resources as identified through the survey and focus groups and how they align to the Standards-in-Action dimensions (using the SIA curricula review tool);

✦ Use the SIA curricula review tool to make suggestions about modification of the curriculum or resources for adult learners; and

✦ Prepare reviewed curriculum and resource suggestions for review by the Connecticut State Department of Education - Office of Adult Education and posting on goopenct.org.

The Curricula Review Teams will be comprised of no less than five (5) certified Adult Education teachers. The Math team will meet a total of six (6) times and the ELA team will meet a total of seven (7) times (an estimated 30 hours total). In addition to the team meetings, each Curricula Review Team member will be required to do “independent work” outside of scheduled meetings.

Visit Standards-in-Action Curricula Review Team Application / Selection Process

The deadline for applications is Friday, January 20, 2023!

ANNOUNCING...

✔ New ESL STEPS Test Blueprints

CASAS released an ESL Reading STEPS Test Blueprint and an ESL Listening STEPS Test Blueprint. https://www.casas.org/social-media-newsroom/webinars

✔ USCIS Updates Policy to Automatically Extend Green Cards for Naturalization Applicants

Effective Dec. 12, 2022, USCIS is updating the USCIS Policy Manual to allow USCIS to automatically extend the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (commonly called Green Cards) for lawful permanent residents who have applied for naturalization. This update is expected to help naturalization applicants who experience longer processing times because they will receive an extension of lawful permanent resident (LPR) status and may not need to file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Green Card).

✔ USCIS Announces Trial for Updates to the Naturalization Test

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a notice in the Federal Register announcing that USCIS plans to conduct a trial for updates to the current naturalization test. The naturalization test has four components: reading, writing, civics, and the ability to speak English. The reading and writing portions of the naturalization test are standard. The purposes of the trial are to test a civics component with updated format and content and a newly developed English-speaking component that could become standard. President Biden’s Executive Order 14012, Restoring Faith in Our Legal Immigration Systems and Strengthening Integration and Inclusion Efforts for New Americans, includes a directive to review the naturalization process. In response, USCIS subject matter experts conducted reviews of the naturalization test and recommended redesigning the speaking and civics test to improve testing standards. The proposed revisions are consistent with the feedback that USCIS has received from multiple external stakeholder groups.

The updates to the naturalization test that will be assessed during this trial are based on feedback from stakeholders about the standardization and structure of the naturalization test. USCIS will conduct the trial with the help of volunteer community-based organizations (CBOs) that work with immigrant English language learners and lawful permanent residents preparing for naturalization. USCIS will seek approximately 1,500 individuals enrolled in adult education classes to take the trial test.

✔ SIA Virtual Training Opportunity on how to design instruction for English learners

The Standards-In-Action Virtual Training Cultivating a Language and Content Focus for English Learners is now available to all adult educators. The training targets two critical instructional needs for ELs: language and academic content development. The training also delivers ready-to-use EL instructional activities and strategies.

The training is comprised of six training sessions offered over a 3-week period with options for registration in January, March, and May 2023. Please see the SIA website through this link for more information, registration, and agenda - https://www.standardsinaction.org/.
