Dear Supporters, Whilst Spring may have sprung in the UK, Rwanda continues to experience heavy rainfall, much to the distress of the valley where Umubano Academy is located. We are constantly working with the local government to advocate for road improvement, to ensure that the students and teachers have safe access to school. Meanwhile, we've had a number of high profile visitors recently, which we hope will be the trend for months to come as we prepare to host CHOGM in Rwanda - watch this space for some recognisable students singing at the event - and fingers crossed 2022 is the year where this finally happens!! In this newsletter, we share updates on our EQUIP and E4PP outreach teacher training courses. We also have some exciting fundraising news and the opportunity for you to cycle in Morocco whilst raising money for APIE - what better way to keep fit, feel good and celebrate the new global freedom as we learn to cope with Covid. I would like to make a special shout-out to Brooks Newmark, APIE's Founder who was in Rwanda earlier this month conducting field research for his Doctorate studies. Instead of heading for some much-needed relaxation following his trip, he changed his travel plans and headed to the Ukraine border of Poland to provide humanitarian support for the refugees. APIE has been following the crisis closely and our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected. We hope you enjoy reading our Spring Newsletter and look forward to sharing more updates throughout the year - please follow us on social media for more news as it happens! Amy Barnecutt, APIE CEO |

Celebrating EQUIP In January we held a symposium to highlight the amazing impact EQUIP has had for headteachers, tutors, teachers and children across Rwanda. Over the past two years, EQUIP has helped to train over 2,000 trainee teachers, teachers and headteachers in over 200 schools in rural Rwanda. So far, the knowledge and teaching practices gained from the EQUIP course has helped to improve the education of over 30,000 children! After three years of FCDO funding for this project, we are now pausing to reflect on our learning before designing EQUIP Phase III. If you know of any funding opportunities to help us continue this important work, please get in touch. |

Education for Positive Peace The pilot of the E4PP course was completed in 6 schools (including Umubano Academy) and one Teacher Training College in January. This course focuses on children's personal, social and emotional skills development, to help them become global advocates for peace. The pilot course was well received and has now been launched on the Rwandan Basic Education Board (REB)'s eLearning platform where teachers across the country can access it for free. We're looking forward to sharing our E4PP course with another 16 Teacher training colleges and 16 model schools. |
