NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2021

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all our members.  On behalf of the Board, let me wish you a happy and safe holiday season.

Thank you to all those members who have contributed to the club via attending busy bee's, doing set, bar and afternoon tea rosters or in any other way in the past year.

The clubs facilities will remain open to members during the festive season although the gates may often be closed.... if you can't remember how to access the club, please drop us a line.

The office will be unmanned from 22 December to 4 January although we will be monitoring emails.  Note our normal office hours are 10am-2pm, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Aces and Places

Congratulations to Evan Bailey on the birth of his first child (Arden) making it great grandson number 3 for Doug Napier. Julie Regan from long standing sponsor William Buck Accountants and Advisors has just celebrated her 35th year of working for the firm - a great achievement! Peter and Alys Woods and Peter and Sandi Cooke are heading to Albany for a holiday. Tony Tarzia and Mike McLean are regulars in the Master Builders Association lawn bowls comp. Brendan Clements recently celebrated his 35th wedding anniversary.  Shirley Davies recently returned from a holiday in Esperance. Ella Nurkic, Ksenija Vujacic, Matt Burton and Adam Napier all survived their year 12 exams and "schoolies" week down south.  Evan Manso starts work with BDO in the new year.  Congratulations to Ray Ferguson on his upcoming 70th birthday.  Veronica Burns is nursing a broken finger which is keeping her out of action whilst it is great to see Frank Hall back on the court.  Best wishes to Kathy Taylor who is heading back to Brisbane. Graeme and Jane Rundle celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. James Connelly has been nominated as a finalist for the Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards for Coaching Excellence (Development).

Gage Roads has renewed their sponsorship providing 8 cartons of beer whilst our podiatry sponsor Anton Claux provided an informative session on leg health and injuries on 24th November.

With no shield match tennis from now to the end of January, hardcourts will have good availability on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.

Looking for Help

We are planning a twilight tennis on 23 January, a quiz night (probably late February), junior wind up (likely late March) and the Soklich Club Dinner (early May).  If anyone is willing to help out at either one or more events, please drop us a line at hptc@bigpond.net.au

We are also again holding a Junior Tournament from 22 - 25 April so any help here would be appreciated too.  Thanks to IGA Preston Street for once again agreeing to sponsor this event.

We hosted a Tenniswest Southern Region Leaders Forum on 30 November.  There was a great turn out with people coming from as far away as Safety Bay and Mahogany Creek.  The forum provided an invaluable opportunity for clubs to get together and learn from each other as well as ask questions of Tenniswest CEO Brett Patten.

Melboune Cup Luncheon

A good crowd turned up again for our luncheon and enjoyed the big race on the club tv's.

Thanks to the organisers and congratulations to the winners of the sweepstakes.

Thanks to Ken McIntosh, Winston Okkers, Ashley Burton, Lee Auguston and Colin Napier for their efforts in digging out around the light poles on the hardcourts and Matt and Cam Burton for a general clean up.  The good news.... our engineering consultant has cleared the structural integrity poles meaning no remedial work is required to clear the rust.

Sponsors Function

We had a function to thank our sponsors for their fantastic support on 12 November.  These functions are an ideal way for the sponsors to connect with members to get maximum value from their sponsorship.

Thanks to all those who attended....and to Ellen for the organisation.  Pictured here is our podiatrist sponsor Anton Claux.

State League Update

Our State League Teams are both unbeaten as we head into the Christmas break.  Our ladies have won 10 matches on the trot with the men sitting at 6 wins and 1 draw. (plus 2 byes)

We held our first ever Friday night Ladies State League match and celebrated with a big victory over Royal Kings Park.  There was a great atmosphere and also attending during the evening were Geoff Baker MLA, and the South Perth Mayor and Club Patron Greg Milner  The ladies doubles was hotly contested with both matches going to a super tie-breaker and the match on centre court being one of the highest standard ladies doubles ever seen at Hensman.

Our junior State League are faring well wth the girls being 1st on the ladder and the boys placing 3rd as we head into the Christmas break.

Christmas Lunch

Peter Hollow once again provided an exceptional Christmas Lunch celebration with the Wednesday afternoon mens crew with over 30 men turning up to enjoy the festivities.  Time was also taken to appreciate Doug Webster's contribution to the social fabric of the club recognising his organisation of birthday lunch events through the year

We also had some wines provided by sponsor Deep Woods as well as platters from IGA in Preston Street.

9 lessons from 2021 we'll be taking into 2022

By / December 2, 2021 2021 was the year we all hoped the world would emerge from the COVID pandemic. Instead, for many, it felt like simply more of the same from 2020. Certainly, for our friends on the east coast of Australia, lockdowns and restrictions were either an ever-present threat or a reality.
