BC’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy Tuesday, August 10, noon - 1 pm From West Coast Environmental Law: This summer – in the midst of deadly extreme heat and ongoing wildfires – the provincial government is consulting the public on BC’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy. Unfortunately, despite the urgency of the climate crisis, the proposed strategy leaves much to be desired. We feel that the BC government needs to do so much more (and more quickly) to protect our communities from climate change. In the wake of this summer’s heat wave and the devastation in interior communities like Lytton due to wildfire, we need a plan that’s accountable with clear deliverables, timelines and responsibilities. Join us for this virtual letter-writing session to discuss and share our views about what’s really needed to prepare BC communities to face the climate emergency. Register here. The government’s Draft Strategy is available here. The deadline for submissions is August 12th. This submission from Yves Mayrand is a great example of a detailed submission. |

Please sign this Letter to the Premier: B.C. is losing its reputation as a climate leader From the David Suzuki Foundation: With increasing carbon emissions, large subsidies for oil and gas production and policies that won’t meet 2030 climate targets, B.C. must act now or risk losing its climate reputation. It’s clear that we can’t meet climate, biodiversity or reconciliation targets under the fracked methane gas status quo. Sign the letter here. |

Please also sign this Letter to the Premier: It’s time to choose climate action From the Georgia Strait Alliance: BC has a huge climate problem. Two years ago, Premier Horgan introduced BC’s climate plan, CleanBC, with a gap of 5.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions between what was projected and BC’s legally-binding 2030 emissions reduction target. The gap is now 7 to 11 million tonnes of carbon. The Province doesn’t have a climate plan that meets its legally binding emissions cap for 2030, and the hole keeps widening. Please send this letter. |

Good News: Recycling Plant to Transform Plastic Debris into Products |
A new plastic-processing plant recently opened in Steveston, B.C., that aims to turn plastic found in B.C.'s oceans into useful products. In the past year, thousands of kilograms of debris, including plastic foam, plastic bottles, nets, rope, abandoned boats and tires, have been removed from B.C.'s shoreline by the province's Clean Coast, Clean Waters (CCCW) initiative. The new specialized recycling facility, operated by the Ocean Legacy Foundation, transforms the material into pellets that can be used to create new plastic products. |
