Around the Farm

Our maize just started tasseling this week. What does that mean? The male flower of the corn plant is known as a corn tassel. After the bulk of the plant growth is complete, tassels will appear on top of the plant. The tassel's job is to produce pollen that encourages the growth and ripening of the corn ear.

A look into our maize milpa with pumpkins in the forefront.

Its breakfast time for our meat birds. It's crazy to see how fast these birds are growing. If you'll notice they don't have as many feathers as the egg laying hens you may be used to seeing. That is because these birds were specifically bred to be meat birds.

This time of summer it's pickling and canning season. These cucumbers are known as pickling cucumbers. Their skins are a bit tougher than the Japanese variety, but perfect for pickling.

How can we tell that Autumn is around the corner? Our apples are slowly starting to turn red. A few more weeks and they'll be ready for apple pie.
