Welcome to Winter!

Winter is officially here! With the passing of the winter solstice on December 21st, the days will now begin getting longer. Winter is a great time to enjoy the forest!  We hope that you have a happy and healthy holiday season! There are several specific opportunities for self-guided "First Day" hikes in Garrett County and throughout the state. For more information, click the linnk below.

Arbor Day Poster Contest
"Trees are Terrific and Forest Products Are Too!"

We are currently accepting entries for the 2021 Arbor Day Poster Contest (open to 5th grade students)! Entries may be mailed to 1728 Kings Run Road, Oakland, MD 21550 or you can email a clear digital photograph of your entry and release form to melissa.nash@maryland.gov. The GCFB is offering county level prizes of $75 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place and $25 for 3rd place. County winner advances to the state contest. Deadline is January 15th. Poster Contest

Garrett County Forestry Board Scholarship

We are accepting applications for our annual scholarship! The GCFB will award a scholarship of $250 to a Garrett County resident student pursuing a degree in a forestry or natural resource related field. You may be attending any college/university/technical school, as long as you are a resident of Garrett County and pursuing a degree in a natural resources field. Applications are due by March 1, 2021 and selection will be made by mid-April.
