UPDATES DURING COVID-19

Like elsewhere, Lakeshore Food Club has been adjusting during the coronavirus pandemic to continue to meet the needs of the community, while doing our best to protect the safety of volunteers, staff and those seeking assistance.

On March 18 the Food Club made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend the grocery store/membership program. Currently, LFC is distributing pre-packed boxes in the LFC parking lot on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-4 pm. Those seeking assistance are asked to pre-register online or by calling the Food Club.

This decision came about because:

  • Many of LFC's volunteers are retirees, and fall into the high-risk population for COVID-19. The decision was made to suspend the volunteer program to protect those who have given so much to the organization.
  • Due to the state/national guidance on social distancing, it was important to move toward a model that required fewer people to execute, and fewer people interacting overall.
  • LFC serves many folks who are at high risk due to age and/or underlying health conditions. The change is limiting their exposure by moving distribution to the parking lot and decreasing face-to-face interaction.
  • Switching to pre-packed boxes opens food distribution up to any and all who have a need at this time. We know many people are utilizing assistance like LFC for the first time, and simplifying intake makes this difficult situation easier for all.

What happens to unused points and memberships from March? Any members who had points on their account as of March 18 will have 30 days to use their balance once LFC reinstates the membership program. At that time, they can purchase a new membership and add those points to it; or they can simply use up the remaining points without purchasing a new 30-day membership.

MANY THANKS

In this new reality, the Food Club is incredibly grateful for the help of generous donors, partners and volunteers who are keeping things running. Special thanks to United Way of Mason County, Staircase Youth Services and Habitat for Humanity of Mason County for lending their staff, time and even vehicles to LFC!

We also want to shout out a few of our amazing in-kind donors: Sanders Meats, House of Flavors, Bread of Life Food Pantry in Baldwin, Urka Auto Center, AMC Classic Ludington, Ludington Bay Brewing Co. and Cornerstone Baptist Church.

WISHLIST

During this time, the best way to support LFC is through a financial contribution. With retail stores running low on many staple items, LFC encourages our community of supporters to stay home and safe - and leave the grocery shelves stocked for shoppers.
