Meeting the Criteria - Advice for cover letters:

 

When writing your cover letter for a job application, you want to highlight how and why you fit their requirements for the position. This means tailoring your cover letter for what they're looking for, as stated in their job description or advertisement, and backing up your statements with clear and concise examples.

 

Oftentimes, when writing cover letters, we summarize our CV in paragraph form and send out copies of the same letter to every new job posting. My recommendation is highlighting how you meet their criteria and adapting your cover letter to each job application.

 

And remember, no one ever fits all of the criteria listed, so don't let a few bullet points stop you from applying, especially if you have most of what they're requiring. Instead, play up the areas in which you are an expert!

Here are some samples taken directly from recent job descriptions that I shared with my clients; how would you be sure to include them in your cover letter?  

 

  • Personalizing instruction, knowing and engaging each learner, using and planning appropriate interventions

  • Knowledge of and experience in using a variety of assessments and applying

    differentiated learning techniques

  • Planning learning sequences that enable students to meet standards and benchmarks of

    courses as well as promoting student growth

  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision

  • Experience collaborating with a large team of teachers

  • Experience teaching EAL students

  • Outstanding verbal & written communication skills

  • Respect and embrace the cultural diversity of our community

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology within lessons in response to student

    learning needs

  • Engage in creative problem-solving and critical thinking

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Other skills and interests to share with our community - coaching athletics & activities, elective classes, performing arts, etc

  • Deliver and develop the advisory/pastorale program

  • To maximize the educational impact of flexibly designed learning spaces that are purposely built to drive innovation and creativity in the classroom

  • We need energetic, risk-taking teachers to help us push the boundaries
