Your Newsletter for Civic Tech, Legal Tech, and Justice For All

Hello Changemakers đŸ‘‹

On today's newsletter we will be touching on legal tips and minimum wage; as well as the continuous fight for equitable voting rights and the pioneers behind the movement. Be sure to grab your umbrella in preparation for D.C.'s Fall ☔️! Do your best to stay safe during these times and help others in the looming threat of Hurricane Ida.

⚖️

Can your employer pay you less than minimum wage?

⚖️

Yes they can, this is called a subminimum wage. According to federal law (29 USC 206), for the first 90 days of your employment, if you are under the age of 20, your employer can pay you no less than $4.25 an hour.

Tips from Reyets: Make sure that you and your employer discuss and have a written agreement about your starting wage. Please note that having a binding legal agreement is important.

Lyft's Recent Commitment to Defending Drivers and Women's Access to Healthcare

Like many of us who prefer not to Uber everywhere, Lyft is an option for drivers and passengers to accomplish two tasks: earning money efficiently and arriving at one's desired destination. However, how might legal efforts interrupt that goal?

A new Texas law (SB8) threatens to penalize drivers for getting passengers where they need to go―specifically applying to women who seek to exercise their right to access the healthcare they need. In response to this law, on September 3, 2021 Lyft reported their disinterest of this recent law and confirmed their support of women's reproductive rights.

Because this law can potentially punish drivers and passengers from accomplishing their goals on the Lyft platform―earning money efficiently and arriving to one's desired location safely―it directly affects the purpose of the platform. Moreover, Lyft has created a Driver Legal Defense Fund to "cover 100% of legal fees for drivers sued under SB8 while driving on our platform."(Lyft).
